i have had Ottos in my planted tank for 7 weeks with no probs until 2 died with the same symptoms. firstly they had what looked like blood bubbles in there abdomen area, i ghess like internal bleeding maybe. i noticed one this morning whilst doing my weekly water change but was eating and swimming around still acting normal. then within 5 hrs or so it was dead :#( does anyone know what this could have been? maybe a parasite or something?
Tank stats are as follows
ph 7.0
amm 0
nitri 0
nitra 0
kh 10
temp 26 degrees
bottled CO2 running 24/7
25% water change weekly
only other fish in there are 2 clown loaches and ramshore snails

I have seen this happen as well with one my of my female sword tails. It developed what looked like a cyst full of blood on its side. The thing popped and she died instantly. I am not sure what it relates to. I doubt it is a parasite though since my other fish seemed to be alright but you can't rule that out as a possibility. Hopefully someone else has had more experience with this. Good luck.

yeh thanks. my ottos had about 5 or more though really tiny like 1/3 pinhead size. when they died i had a close look at there stomach area and its like there scales/skin had disolved revealing a hole. there was like yellow stuff? not sure if this was there internal organs or stomachs. sorry not nice but want to know whats killed them as i still have 2 left. ive noticed that lately there stomachs have been full looking, it was what i thought to be a good sign that they where getting plenty to eat from grazing on my algae, but now im worried this might also be something to do with whats wrong? i dont feed them anything other than the algae thats in the tank.

In this case take them back and tell them you are not very happy at all and ask what caused these sudden deaths.

Mine only eat the algae in the tank I have tried giving them an algae tab but it is left untouched.

Have a look in [link=My Profile]http://

yeh i tried Algae tabs too but they didnt touch them. i blanched a spinach leaf and only the snails ate that so i figured they prefer to clean my plants leaves!
yeh im not happy with what is happening, they are not cheap fish and when they die and i suspect its not my doings it makes me want to ring the LFS. This is the same place i got my "scratching" guppys from
it is a new shop whos tanks are poss still settling in or god forbid still cycling you would think not though surely?? oh well i will go back to my old LFS i think. just thought id give this new one a try.

otos can be sensitive....they prefer established tanks where theres plenty of food around.

A lot of bacteria can cause necrosis in gut tissues, as can infections of the more virulent worms like tapeworm etc, even severe protozoan infections can cause this.

A lot of fish stomachs may rot and "blow" shortly after death as a result of gas from decomposing food and bacterial growth . Was the fish pretty fresh when you looked at him, or had he been there a few hours or even overnight?

I have had this happen to several ottos
before as well. They first got large "full" looking
bellies, which then turned into large bubbles near
their anus which explode and kill them.
I suspect it may be something endemic in certain otto
populations.

Ottos are very sensitive little guys, and once something,
disease, parasite, fungus, etc affects them, they almost always die.

A Wide spectrum antibiotic, such as tetracycline, maracyn 1&2 treated synergistically, or the like, would probably be your best bet to help save any other ottos you have.
Good luck.
