Yesterday some of my betta's scales looked like they were missing or falling off, and her fins were a bit raggady, but they didn't look like they had been nipped or anything. I took her (It is a female) to the aquarium, and they said it was just from bickering with the other female betta in the tank.

This morning I find her eyes have a funny slime blob on them and so do most of the other fish in the tank!!! aaaaagh. The fish also have raggady stringy fins.

I have never had any problems before like this, and I put in Melafix and Primafix. Is is some type of fungal infection?

10 UK gallon tank, 45 Litres approx.
-6 platys
-2 female bettes

Filter: Eheim Aquaball 2010 (For a 60-120 Litre Tank)
Ammonia: 0.0
Nitrite: 0.0
Nitrate: 6.0
Water Changes: Every 10 days 30 percent

Please Help me!!!!:#(

Melafix and primafix will not hurt the fish or resolve the problem. Do a 50% water change today and a 50% water change tomorrow with a 50% water change the next day. Do your filter maintenance. Take a sample of your water to your LFS to verify your test results.

Sounds like a nitrate reaction.

I just retested the water and the nitrate was 20.00! I don't know how, but I did a 40% water change, and they look much better. They are still eating readily and seem much happier now! Thanks! So I should stop putting Melafix and Primafix? SO it is not a disease at all? Thankyou so much!/:'

I would continue the treatment with Melafix as it will act as anti stress type of medication .

Also add a good Bacteria starter to bring back your good bacteria.

Sorry I forgot to add
I would also do a 30% water change weekly. By doing this less chance of it happening again.

Thanks so much, I will do that. I am also taking back my platys (They were actually babies of a fish that died a while ago) and the bettas are going in a different tank. I am restocking it with some tetras instead.

Kitty, do one or two more large water changes in the next couple of days. A 40% water change should reduce your 20 ppm nitrates to 12 ppm but it will bounce upwards quickly depending on fish load, plants and filter maintenance. A second 40% water change will knock the nitrates back to 7 ppm with a bounce back. A much healthier level but I would treat your fish to one more water change after that as a get well present.

I would continue with the Melafix and Pimafix as well.
Sounds almost like something fungal to me.
6 platys is a bit much in a 10g tank,
but as pointed out many more water changes should help.
If they dont show improvement, I would opt for a
higher quality medication.

The Platys are going in another tank. The white stuff is gone from there tails, only a tiny bit left on the eyes. I will do another water change today. Thanks

Are you going to increase the frequency or amount of your regular water changes?

Yer, I am going to do them weekly instead of every fortnight. I am also changing the stock to fish though. I think it may also have been to do with our water though.
