Hi Everyone,
I have a zebra danio that over the past week has changed in looks. His back has 'sunk in'
He swims as usual, he seems happy and is eating well.
My tank is 5'(298L)(79g), heavily planted and ph, nitrate, ammonia levels have just been done and are aok
I have a picture of my Zanio on the following link.

Has anyone had the same thing happen or know of what may have happened.
Any comments appreciated,
Cheers Bubblelover

Hi the same has happened to me in my female (if this ever happens it is normally in females)do u no if it is a female or not and how old is it? mine lived like that for 2 years but in the last 6 monthes of it's life it sat a lot at the bottom of the tank and found it hard to eat. I think this may happen from play and the spin can not take it (it is usually the females as the males chase them in breeding) Hope this will help u

Wow, thats some severe kinking of the spine, looks like it might have survived a bout of fish tuberculosis (mycobacterium) or suffered injury , possibly even a kind of osteoporosis.

What do you feed them on?

Hi,
Yup it looks pretty gross I feel so sorry for him the way he is, but as I said he is happy He doesn't show any sign at all of discomfort or pain, he seems to get on well with all his neighbours as I never see anyone bothering him or visa versa. I have a loving family in my tank except for Mr Ghost Knife who did try to be 'boss' but then settled after being in the tank for a week. I've actually seen him slither aside the Angel as if he was flirting with her. (please dont tell me he was actually trying positions for the upcoming kill or something....I like to think I have a happy family ) Anyway back to my deformed danio. My fish are fed on one cube frozen blood worms every morning and a couple of shakes Sera Vipagran. At night they get a few pinches of Growth and colour granules, some Shrimp pellets and alternate days I put some algae waffers in the tank. Also once a week I only give them one feed. (Had a huge nitrate problem at one stage....learnt by my mistakes as we do ) I had a read about fish tuberculosis (mycobacterium) and found it's diagnosed by a biopsy. Won't put my happy danio thru that. I've had a couple of skin biopsies done and .... well ... they hurt.. Maybe your right with the osteoporosis, although you'd think he would be showing some sign of pain? If he starts to show any 'painful' signs, I will post on here. Your comments are really appreciated.....
Cheers,
BubbleLover

It could some type of birth defect as it gets older it is noticed more. Recently I was reading a food for tropical fish article and it mentioned it can be caused by a poor diet. Now that does not mean you are doing it. It could have been done from birth or from his mother not having a proper diet.

All I am saying here it "Could Be" as I have no other knowledge of this problem yet I have seen it many times in gupies.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

Judging pain in fish visually is often difficult, most fish are actually evolved not to show pain as it gives a predator an edge in picking them off. Often the only sign that pain is becoming unbearable is that the fish dies from stress related ailments. Brave little dudes . Sounds like the fish's diet is good, so I guess some sort of mineral uptake or secretive difficulty is causing the problem , probably genetic in origin, but if you get other unrelated fish with a problem then you know you have fishy TB. Maybe limited exposure to uvb light might help, it does in a few fish, but I honestly think that particular fish has gone too far to correct. Oh well, as long as he seems happy. I wouldnt breed from him, but bearing in mind he wont look too good for breeding to other fish, I doubt there'll be issues there.

Thanks for your comments,
I guess as long as he keeps on swimming happily around I'll just leave him as is. I hope he isn't in pain. I'll keep an eye on the rest of the community and make sure no one else starts to go this way.
Cheers
