That would explain some of the things down there, some of the unearthly biological contraptions

What you are describing is the "suscribe to thread" thing, which sends you an email whenever there is another reply to the thread you subscribed to. The active threads thing is that place down below the off-topic forums that shows all of threads you have participated in recently. The green folders next to the thread name indicates that one or more replies have been added to that thread since you last visited the site. I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.
