An 8.6 hit south of Tasmania. I know there isn't much south of Tasmania, alot of water until Antarctica, but were any of you close enough to feel it.

I'm not in Tasmania but my uncle and his family are. It happened early morning so they were all sleeping and didnt know about it.
Lucky it happened off shore or it would of caused some major damage! Apparently the area is quite e to getting the shakes.
I think there is one Tassy member here, although I cant think who it is right now. Please forgive my forgetfulness!

Yeah, Claire might've.

I heard about it on the radio, a lady rang up and said her bed was shaking... then she sang jingle bells.

Perhaps she thought she was riding in a sleigh.

8.6 is a monster quake, the middle of the ocean is a good place for it to happen. Provided it doesn't produce a tsunami.

Happy Holidays Mike

Apparently it was the biggest quake in the world this year. So in the middle of the ocean is definitely the best place for it!

A lot of New Zealanders felt it but only in the south. I'm in the north so didn't feel a thing. People reported it as a gentle rolling motion by the time it hit land.

Well, I'm glad it ws in the middle of the ocean...I experienced a 5.6 (the only true earthquake I've been in) and it was quite interesting...8.6 would be terrifying in my opinion...Heidi
