How could you hate a day that people go out of their way to give you chocolate??

I'm a vegan, and I'm constantly having people trying to shove non-vegan foods in my face (even when they know I'm a vegan) and getting upset when I turn them down.

Otherwise, I agree with Meriadoc. I dislike the commericalism and don't think that we should devote one day to treat our partners especially nicely.

Ah, sorry to hear it, Corydoran.. One of my good friends is vegan, so I know how hard it is for her.. She likes Dagoba bars, and I have to admit I've a fondness for the lavendar/blueberry.. Sooooo:

*hands Corydoran a handful of assorted flavored Dagoba bars*

Personally, I don't mind that there is a day set aside for showing one's affection for another.. Sure, I do it practically every day with just simple acts of love, but it's not a hardship to devote one specific day to showing them in a more ounced manner.. So what that someone else chose the day?? It's easy to forget how important someone in your life is with how fast people run these days.. Sometimes people need the push.. If you're not one of those people, then expending the effort shouldn't be that big of a deal since you're already good at it..

If the commercialism bothers you it's not like you have to run out and buy anything.. A handful of wild flowers (which I got from my son), handwritten notes (or emails from friends), a quiet moment.. I was happy with all of those things and they didn't cost my loved ones a dime..

Even if you're not involved with someone, romantic love is only one aspect, IMO.. Sure, Valentine's Day is geared towards that, but no ones going to be upset that you took the time to vocalize a bond of friendship.. There's also familial love and that's just as important.. It's all what you choose to make of it..

my wife gets flowers on a weekly basis

*steals mrs mario's flowers*

This Valentine's Day I was running a convention and forgot completely about what day it was. Then all the little kids from the creche came in and sprinkled tiny gold hearts and glitter on the dining tables. Some of them missed and ended up on the chairs. So the rest of the day we were wishing each other "Happy Valentine's Day from the heart of my bottom"

Also Feb 14 is my grandad's birthday. Apparently his mother wanted to name him Valentino. Fortunately his father put his foot down, or my Grandad would have been Valentino Starr. Crikey!

Nope, I don't hate Valentine's Day. And I don't hate being alone. Sure, I would love it if some guy gave me flowers or chocolates or whatever, but I'm not going to sit around getting all bent out of shape about it if they don't.

Well, it was going pretty bad, except...

my mom sent a box with all sorts of goodies.

One of my friends had a "dateless losers party" in honor of "Singles Awareness Day", and I went and had a blast. Played Halo and Goldeneye and watched Mystery Science Theater 3000.

So after about 6:30 pm it was actually a great day! Before that I was feeling like I had less social life than a salamander though.

I don't... particularly like Valentine's Day. And to add on to that, I don't really get that much chocolate, candy... or anything on that day.

why should big business get to chose one day out of the year to show appreciation to a special someone in your life? my wife gets flowers on a weekly basis, and chocolate is purchased when craved.

imo- reserving one day out of the year to shower extra attention on your lover/companion because it is a holiday makes no sense.

I never really minded it...

Even though I'm not single this year, I didn't mind it when I was single.

Heck, it was free candy and chocolate...what was there not to like?

I think it's kinda sickening, but I certainly don't hold that big of a grudge against a holiday. I mean c'mon, it's one day out of 365, we can deal.

I like the days after valentines when all the chocolate goes on sale....even if it is yucky american chocolate .
This year I was flying back from my sisters wedding, so was on the shuttle bus @12:30 in the morning and wished compleat strangers a happy valentines day....we all pretty much agreed with "bleh". Had a co-worker give me a small piece of chocolate...*shrug*

oh...and had a friend send me a big happy valentines day greeting even though he knew I tried to ignore the day .....good thing he doesn't exist except for me to kick him .

mmmmhmmmm

the chocolate clearance sales are good but all of the hearts and teddy bears can be a bit depressing. I'm with these comments:

I never used to, but now that I'm single, I really really really hate Valentine's Day.

if you're single, of course it seems like it sucks big time

Its true. If you are with someone it is a very good/special/romantic day but if you are not with someone then it is lonely/misruable.

OTOH I did actually manage a chat with my ex-partner-current-"special"-friend/other which was ok.... turns out he has been having a very bad week sooooooooo vday just wasn't happening. What a surprise, he was having a hard time with holidays again....

Where did I put that fish whack smiley

valentine's day is only what you make of it. if you're single, of course it seems like it sucks big time but if you have someone in your life, then it turns into time you set aside to be together with them. assuming of course, that you *want* to be with them in the first place...

I have a good reason to my first wife walked out on me that day within miniutes of asking her where did she want to go for a special for dinner. That was over 30+ years ago. The only good thing about it it changed my life forever for the better. Being a special calander day it is impossible not to remember.
I often say it was the worst day in my life but the begining of a new and happy life with my new and wondeful wife of 29 years.

i don't dislike it.

i just don't like the commercialism of it all and being forced to celebrate a day that if you really loved someone, you'd show it every day, just not one day out of the year.

now, as for celebrating it? Nah, I feel like a sheep.

Hi,
I don't like the commericalism of the day, but to see
my wife's face when she reads my card to her, is priceless
even after 27 years of marriage.

Besides, its a chocolate lovers heaven!
