I'm no Aussie, but I am a human being; that "being" said (har har, I made a funny), I'd like to offer my condolences.

And here they are: That sucks. A lot. Considering a full grown goldy pleco here costs over 150 bucks, I imagine it'd be worth at leat thrice as much over there. It sounds as if he had some rare hypancistrus as well. I hope the thief perishes by way of rectal cancer of something.

microchip does not cost that much actually. Koi are worth enough that it is far cheaper than the value of the fish, same with those fish stolen

Dave hit the nail on the head. Who ever stole these fish were probably filling out some scumbags shopping list. ]:|

The cost of the micro chip, without research grants, etc. would probably be worth as much if not more than the fish itself.

Yes Keith you can have tag things put in fish. My dad is a biologist and they put the litte mirco-tags(similar to dog and cat tags) in striped bass so they can track them when they migrate up north and back exc.

I would think the fish would have to be mabye 5-6in min(just a guess but ill ask my dad to make sure) because the tags are about the size of a grain of rice.

Most animal theives will have buyers before they even have the animals. It's unlikely they'll be in the classifieds or a pet shop, unless they are really stupid.

The fish would already be in a private collection, IMO.

prize koi get microchipped sometimes, just sad to have to think about doing that. I'd figure harder with the plecos, they have less meat on them...

Also happens in the Bird and Reptile world too.

And yes, larger fish can be microchipped.

I mentioned this to a LFS today and was well informed they have hidden cameras to cover the total area.

Another friend who lost all his Discus never saw or heard of them again.

This also happens in the Orchid world as well.

Just a question can larger fish have implants like they do with cats and dogs?

they are likely to pop up here though. I'll watch carefully.

Doesnt matter where you live dude and alex, chances are the plecos, because of their rarity, will not be sold in Melbourne anyway. It would be very easy to trace.

Thanks for keeping eyes and ears open about this for me.
