Big job interview tomorrow - wish me luck! | |
just beginning Moderator Literature Nerd Posts: 1879 Kudos: 1380 Votes: 198 Registered: 17-Dec-2000 | I'm gathering luck from as many people as I can . I recently applied for a job that is pretty well up there on my list of 'dream possible jobs', and that pays more than double my current job. Today I got a call requesting I go for a face-to-face interview tomorrow morning. I have no idea how many others they are interviewing or what my chances are (I definitely fulfil all their requirements though, plus quite a few of their 'preferred's), but I'm trying to think positive. Now, to gather my portfolio and iron my clothes and brush up on my interview technique and calm my brain... The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it. - Oscar Wilde |

just beginning Moderator Literature Nerd Posts: 1879 Kudos: 1380 Votes: 198 Registered: 17-Dec-2000 | It went quite well, but she seemed unsure of whether I had enough experience (never mind that the duties as she described them are all things that I've been doing for years ), so I'm not terribly optimistic. Ah well, I'd only have been able to stay for a year or so anyway, as I'm going to the UK for two years at that point. Still, would have made it a lot easier to save some money to take with me (not to mention pay for my wedding ). The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it. - Oscar Wilde |

I guess it's something one can get used to, but to me they'll always be a bit nerve racking. Do they know you'd only be able to stay for a year? If not I wouldn't mention it to them, a year might be worth it to them but I bet they would think it isn't. ^_^ |

Don't you hate it when they say 'we'll let you know our decision' and then never ever contact you again? However I've got some promising new leads. Not so dreamy as my dream job, but still better than my current job. More importantly, they are DIFFERENT to my current job. I like my boss a lot and I like the work I do there, but after more than two years it's gotten repetitive, I feel like I sleepwalk through it all and I'm not challenged anymore. And the company is so small and slow-moving, and my boss so disorganised (granted she is trying to run a business with just herself and me, but still) that we have projects we have been trying to get off the ground for years, that never go anywhere except around and around in circles. The frustration of it all these days is getting unbearable. I'll feel guilty about leaving as my boss relies on me far too much - i know I'll be leaving her with a lot more on her own shoulders (it could take her a year to find a replacement for me, knowing her), but I've let that hold me back before and I promised myself I would never do it again. Gotta look out for myself now! The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it. - Oscar Wilde |

Don't you hate it when they say 'we'll let you know our decision' and then never ever contact you again? wanna know whats funny about that? Mike (hubby) had a lead for a job in denver at the beginning of the year. He interviewed with the headhunter, and then one of the tech guys at the company. Not heard a thing in three weeks. Then, last week we heard they wanted him to go up there for an interview. He interviewed just this past monday, and now we're in the process of moving to denver. We pretty much wrote it off as a nowhere thing, that he didn't get it - but it all turned out in the end |

just beginning Moderator Literature Nerd Posts: 1879 Kudos: 1380 Votes: 198 Registered: 17-Dec-2000 | I think things might be turning out all right in the end for me too (I say this tentatively, trying not to jinx it...). Not with that job, but with another one. I interviewed for it this morning and it went really, really well. Plus, I just felt so good being in that office - all the staff members I saw looked happy and smily despite it being Monday morning, and I could hear a lot of chattering and laughter in the background. The two women who interviewed me were really lovely and friendly and easygoing (the editor had her shoes off and feet curled up underneath her on the chair, just the way I like to sit at work!). I'm quite certain I gave all the right answers to their questions, and I'm excited by the expansions the company is making. The flagship magazine itself is one I've been reading for years. The editor told me that I am basically on their shortlist, and although they had interviewed a couple of people already and were interviewing a couple more, none of them had really met up to their standards until me. They have two positions as well which obviously doubles the chances! The publisher will be phoning me today or tomorrow to discuss salary so that i can decide whether or not I want to stay on the shortlist ba (mini, non-jinxing claps) The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it. - Oscar Wilde |

An old co-worker and friend of mine found his dream job by chance. Bethesda softworks was hiring (they write videogames) and he went for an interview. I think he liked the table of sodas they had and the fact he'd be allowed to wear shorts (one of the reasons he wanted to leave the previous job). I'd hold my breath for ya JB, but tomorrow is still a ways off . ^_^ |

just beginning Moderator Literature Nerd Posts: 1879 Kudos: 1380 Votes: 198 Registered: 17-Dec-2000 | So the publisher told me the salary , much higher than i expected and in fact pretty much on a par with that first 'dream job' I interviewed for. Of course I acted like I get offered jobs in that salary range every day, but I was mentally jumping up and down on my toes with excitement. She told me then that they were 'very impressed' with me and would be calling me within a couple of days with their decision. She also asked when I can start, so I don't think I'm jumping the gun too much by thinking I have a good chance of getting this. I called my current employer that night to tell her there was a good chance that I'll be leaving soon (and I was terrified, took me an hour of staring at the phone before I actually picked it up and called her), she was sad but she understands it is an opportunity I can't pass up. I offered to throw the job opening out into my own contacts of young, fresh editorial types so she can find a replacement quickly (once I know for sure that I am leaving that is), and also to come in a couple of Saturdays for the next two months to help get the issues out through the difficult transition period. Which will also just mean extra pocket money for me (and my wedding). So I will probably find out today. Yesterday my phone rang several times when I was at work, and every time my heart started pounding because I was sure it would be the publisher, but every time it turned out to be one of my friends. Hoping today the only time it rings it will be her, and with good news! The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it. - Oscar Wilde |
