The fruit are nice but I hate the plants! I'm discovering that they spread everywhere at great speed. I have used poison on them which hasnt done a thing to them. ]:|
I have spent the last hour digging some of them out and while I was careful I have some battle wounds where the bushes got the better of me. (they have spines under the leaves too)
Has anyone got some suggestions on how I can kill these tough things and how to stop the stinging from the thorns?
I'm trying to make a vege garden and this stuff is taking up most of the space. One shoot had me fooled from a while, it grew up right next to a tomato plant. Grrrrr....

Oh and i'm sunburnt for my efforts too.

Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes. That way you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

Blackberries are the worst weeds... Let's see... my brother has done some battling with them. I think a good shot at it would be a long-handled trimmer thing... like gardening shears, but with the 3-4' hadles... then you can get to the base of it without touching it. Definitely wear heavy gloves. Probably want to trim from the edges down to the bottom, then try and get rid of the roots. I think my bro took the DR Field and Brush mower to the giant one that was on our church campus. I'll ask him next time we talk. Which was going to be today but I need to get to sleep and he probably will be too.

There are Blackberry poisons at selected nurseries. It also could have been taken of the market reason being it is very dangerious to use.

It also could have a very extensive root system which can take more that the average garden tools to remove.

Contact the local Govenment lands authority/council and they migh be able to give you the correct advice.

you could always burn it i guess, but thats gunna be one mighty big fire. It would at least get the spikey bits out of the way and let you have a shot at the roots

You could try cutting the stem as close to the base as possible (if it's not too thick) and then immediately apply glyphosphate (herbicide from Bunnings, etc) to the cut area. Continue applying the glyphosphate to any resprouts but beware that you don't get it onto any surrounding plants

We have a huge hillside covered in it in our garden.

As someone mentioned, get the long handled shears to take the above ground systems shifted. Then apply poison to the top of the stuff which goes into the ground and place a bag over the ends and tie off with string. The bag will prevent it getting onto other plants or animals.

This plant goes very deep and spreads under ground and is very difficult to control.

Ours was planted by a neighbour who has since eradicated it from their garden. It remains covering 80% of our garden. I shall so enjoy trying to clear a patch for our Nov 5th celebrations.

Kim

p.s. Burn everything you pull up as the stuff just refuses to die.

I'm slowly getting the bushes down. Most of the big ones are gone or i've atleast slowed down. I have been doing a little bit of work on them each day, it seems every day I go out there I find new sprouts of them. Damn things!
I had a peek over a neighbours fence yesterday. I've found where they are coming from. Grrrrrrrrr!

Dig at the surrounding soil with a hoe (sp?), then use a rake to yank the plant out. Thats a while but better than those nasty pricks and thorns. I do it like that to most vines.

Edit: if they are coming from your neighbors yard, you might considering to put concrete under the fence. This blocks out the rooting system (which I do for bamboo plants). Takes a while to dig the trench for concrete, but your efforts would pay for the future.

Here's what my brother said from his succesful battling with some quite large blackberry bushes:

Cut the bush down from the outside down to the stumps... then mow over it... then spray herbicide on the stems. You may end up losing some good garden plants in the process

diesel fuel kills just about everything, but forget about planting anything else in the area in your lifetime.

cut the plant down to the soil, then cover it with a large sheet of dark plastic. sunlight is blocked, and the temp. gets high enough to finish the plant off. it takes several weeks, but kiss the b-berries goodbye
