You can safely take Benadryl while you're pregnant. I went through boxes of the stuff because of allergies. There's some other OTC cold medecine that you can take, too. You might check with your OB and see what he/she recommends.

Hope you feel better soon!

I think i'm getting my flu dose out the way early this year. One can only have so much homemade chicken soup and dry biscuits in a week before they are as sick of the food as they are from the illness!

I have found some relief in some sinus remedies at the health food store that are natural. I can't recall the name brand or name , but you put 2-3 of these pills under your tongue and the next thing you know, the sinuses seem to open not long after.

Are you sure it is not allergy? In my neck of the woods, they've had many comments on it and have reported that tree and mold allergens are very high. Complaints are rampant. Unless there is a fever, I'd lean on the side of allergy.

EDIT: Wait a minute - you are headed into fall - cold and flu season there in AUS aren't you? - I keep forgetting that we have opposing seasons. :88)

I agree with Frank about the steam inhalation.

Steam inhalations are highly under rated. Helps clear the breathing. Stops the mucous from ending up in your tummy and making you nauseous or blocking your ears.

Lindy also have someone rub the vicks on your upper back, between your shoulders, and on your neck...then take a hot hot hot damp wash rag and place it over your throat...also on the cheek bones, under the nose, my mother likes to rub it up her nose a little, ugh And goodness, me I hope your package gets there soon, maybe the Jalapeno Jelly might help? Friday or Saturday, I'll get you some "Salsa" and the rest of your goodies, and get them on priority mail to you...worst come to worst, eat the salsa on eggs, and whatever you feel like (water in hand) and your nose will be cleared up in a jiffy If Benadryl is safe, can you get it there? Of course it is gonna knock you down, and make you sleepFeel better soon, heidi

Frank, your suggestion is my preferred, i'll wait another 6 months or so and do that whether I have a cold or not I think!
I have some vicks vapour rub and eucalyptus oil in the oil burner. I've been doing the steamy water thing inbetween catching up on sleep that I didnt get last night.
Mum's are good things, mine came and collected Ryan for the day so I could sleep.
I'll look into the other things you guys recommended. Thanks for replying.

OOPS...

I have not had to worry about that phrase "being pregnant"
for quite a while... I completely forgot about that.
Sorry!

I second the echinacea and garlic, and horseradish for helping to dry up mucus. Of course, check first that all of these are safe for your little one.

FRANK! you can't have vodka when you're pregnant!!!

So what might work......

Eucalyptus oil can be used as a rub, you just rub a very small amount of it on your chest like vick's vaporub.... a little bit goes a long way so if you want you can mix it with some carrier oil....sweet almond, grapeseed, canola, safflower, sunflower, sesame, wheat germ, olive and peanut oil will work.

I have a bottle of eucalyptus oil here, it says to take 1 tsp and put it in 2 cups of boiling water and inhale the vapours or "rub gently on chest."

Fisherman's Friend lozenges might also be safe if you can get them there, if my memory is right they're just licorice and menthol basically but they work well. I used to use the sucrose free ones when I was singing, they really strip the mucous out of your throat.

Hot herbal tea with some honey and lemon in it is good as well. [/font]

I have come down with an awful sneezy, eye watering, runny nosed cold. Just been to the chemist looking for something to help relieve symptoms only to be told I cant take anything because I'm pregnant. I've gone through a box full of tissues and I have a sinus headache like you wouldnt believe!

So i'm wondering about alternate herbal type stuff. Can anyone recommend anything?

Hi,
A tall pitcher of Orange Juice, and Vodka (added to taste)
Sit out on deck in reclining lounger during a bright sunny
day... Good for what ails ya..

Frank

Seriously though, when I was a kid my folks used to use
Vicks Vaporub on my chest, and a smear under my nose.
The eucalyptus in it cleared me right up. Another choice
was to add the stuff to some boiling water into a bowl
and toss a towel over your head, close your eyes, and
form a tent that enclosed your head and the bowl of hot
water and deep breathly..

eucalyptus (sp?) oil. Add 5 or 6 drops to a small pot of boiling water and breath in the steam. I do this all the time for colds. Also.. how about a big bowl of spicey chili?

Oh that's rough, especially when you're pregnant.

Do you have anything like Vicks VapoRub there? It's a mentholated rub, can be put on your chest, throat or even a bit under your nose. Been around for years, my mom used it on us when we were kids and that was a hundred years ago I would think it's safe, they even make a version for babies. Johnson's does as well.

I remember being told not to eat honey when pregnant, although that was 6 years ago. Something about potential botulism I think; I'd check into it first.

Zinc and echinacea might help, they're often recommended to prevent a cold, or at the very first symptoms. Even with natural, herbal remedies be sure to check with your doctor.

Boil a pot of water, when it's good and steamy put your face over it with a towel over your head. You can also run your shower hot with the bathroom door shut making a steam room...something of a waste of water but it does help.

Hope you start feeling better soon...I'll see if I can think of anything else.

You could heavy on the garlic and echinacea if you want, but they won't do anything immediate.

I'll suggest a nice indian take away, preferably mild/medium vindaloo, and then a mug of lemon and honey tea

And wedge the tissues up your nostrils. its not very pretty, but it stops the frustration of constant blowing!

Lindy, try eating a couple of radishes. My hubby recommends then for clearing up the head. Hope it works for you too. ***Tiger
