FRANK Moderator Posts: 5108 Kudos: 5263 Votes: 1690 Registered: 28-Dec-2002 | Hi, I took Philosophy 101 on a whim when I started classes. That first class session the professor described some of the leading philosophers and their beliefs. When he was done he asked if he'd left anything out... I raised my hand and when recognized, I said "You missed one..." He frowned, and thought, and said "what did I miss?" I told him that he should "turn and start walking and let me know if he doesn't walk into the class room wall... That's "Log Cabin" Philosophy." (He'd been trying to describe if the mind creates what we see or if we merely interpret what we see. The class erupted into laughter, and it marked the beginning of my minor. Later, when we were studying Asian religions, that same professor walked into the class, and on seeing me in the class, looked at me and said "Frank, Zen is going to be hard enough for these folks.. Shhh!" He tried and tried to get me to switch majors but I can't help it, I love playing with rocks and digging in the dirt. Enjoy the Philosophy class(s) Frank -->>> The Confidence of Amateurs, is the Envy of Professionals <<<-- |

Thought I'd never have to deal with those two again. He makes jokes at everything none stop....seriously. And he gives lectures wearing beach clothes and sunnies German....he fails anyone who ounces his name wrong His name is "Schiesser", very close to "Scheisser" which literally means faeces in a rude manner. |

All eight of them. From a pair of classes that are equivalent to two vital bio courses here. And did I mention that I'm a biology major and that those two classes are prerequisites for everything else biology related? The person I need to talk to apparently doesn't pick up her phone, or return messages, or anything else helpful. I wish the directory gave a location for her office so I could talk to her face to face. |

I already registered for next quarter's classes... more Chemistry, Calculus, and an elective class on Global Warming. I'm still trying to get into a Biology class I'm supposed to take, but all of the sections filled up before I was even scheduled to sign up for classes. So now I have to figure out a way to get in. sham Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 3369 Kudos: 2782 Votes: 98 Registered: 21-Apr-2004 | At least you know who to talk to and they actually exist. My boyfriend called to ask a question about the computer program and they said they'd make an appointment at 5pm and gave him a room number and building name. So we go to the building and there is no room by that number... There aren't even any classrooms or offices in that building only a big cafeteria and the bookstore. We check a few other buildings but none of the rooms with that number look right. Finally we go to the computer department and they have no idea about any appointment. They ask who he talked to on the phone and after asking around decide that person doesn't exist. The name is listed nowhere and noone has heard of it. Then they sent him from the computer department down to the overall advising section who called the computer department and sent him back. It was an interesting day. |

wish-ga Mega Fish Dial 1800-Positive-Posts Posts: 1198 Kudos: 640 Registered: 07-Aug-2001 | Books your original post is very interesting... our system must be very different. At university here (Australia) there are no standard across the board classes for the 1st yr students (we don't have special names for each year like soph and all that). At uni one goes straight into Law, Psych, History, Bio specialty.... each degree has core units and you can make up the other credits with your own interest subjects (within reason). No testing the water or checking if you are up to speed. Commence your degree and sink or swim. No wonder the drop out rate is so high. Sounds like we are expected to specialise straight away... prolly they hope you will start accounting and change your mind and commence another degree all the while paying fees. Tricksy! ~~~ My fish blow kisses at me all day long ~~~ |

sirbooks Moderator Sociopath Posts: 3875 Kudos: 5164 Votes: 932 Registered: 26-Jul-2004 | There are still tons of people here that change majors. One good point about the "General Education" courses is that most can be applied to other major programs, so you don't lose as much time if you change midstream. I think the purpose of Gen. Ed. is to "broaden our horizons" or some buzzphrase like that. Supposed to give people general knowledge that they can use in all walks of life, etc. Doesn't work, everybody hates Gen. Ed. here. |

sham Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 3369 Kudos: 2782 Votes: 98 Registered: 21-Apr-2004 | I'm sure a certain level of knowledge is required everywhere else. They just may not test you and force you to take certain classes you would need to accomplish the higher level classes before getting a degree. Here you are usually tested for your level of knowledge. Most places accept an ACT and SAT or they also often have their own placement test in case you haven't taken those. Your score on that plus the classes you've taken in highschool determine what level you should start at. My sister started taking the 2nd calc class which would be a 3rd year math class normally because of how she did on the Iowa State math test. It's hard to get out of english requirements though. I tried every semester. They seem to think you can't get enough english even if you score high on those portions of the tests. There is nothing I hate more than english classes and writing.. except maybe public speaking. Mostly cause I have to write the speeches first. |

Natalie Ultimate Fish Guru Apolay Wayyioy Posts: 4499 Kudos: 3730 Votes: 348 Registered: 01-Feb-2003 | I think I might have failed chemistry. I hate chemistry. I especially hate this class, because it's more like a math class than a science class. I hate math even more than chemistry. In my chemistry class, it doesn't really matter if you know the scientific concepts (which I'm good at), all that matters on the tests is the math (which I suck at). Pfft... I actually tested into honors chemistry on the placement test, because the test focused more on the science than the math. I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash. |

sirbooks Moderator Sociopath Posts: 3875 Kudos: 5164 Votes: 932 Registered: 26-Jul-2004 | I know how you feel. I hate math with a passion, and hate the math part of chemistry. I did better than I thought in chem though (C+). What I'm really afraid of is that some Internet sources say that even biologists should take lots of math, as well as some physics and engineering courses. I fear all three. |

That's the course I'm fearing the most. It combines the worst aspects of physics and chemistry into one giant blob of calculus insanity. Joe Potato |

Natalie Ultimate Fish Guru Apolay Wayyioy Posts: 4499 Kudos: 3730 Votes: 348 Registered: 01-Feb-2003 | Yeah, no physics or anything for me either. I just have to take three "basic chemistry" classes (called Chemistry 2, divided into three one-quarter classes - 2A, 2B, and 2C). I don't even have to take organic chemistry, which kind of sucks because not only do I find it to be a lot easier than "regular" chemistry, but for me it's a lot more interesting too. Oh well, at least I'm getting As in my Human Evolutionary Biology and Animal Biology classes... I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash. |

Cup_of_Lifenoodles Fish Guru Posts: 2755 Kudos: 1957 Votes: 30 Registered: 09-Sep-2004 | Chemistry rocks. How can anyone not enjoy it? I did manage a B due to a very, very poor performance on our third (yes, third) midterm, since I pretty much skipped the entire frq section, having run out of time. But regardless---it's still awesome. Physics, on the other hand (especially non-coneptual stuff), is a pain in the rear. |
