Apparently they wear shells for a little while when they are younger, but I imagine at some point the availability of large shells decreases and they've just evolved not to need them. I sometimes show my land hermits pics of coconut crabs so they have something to aim for I'd probably have to modify the spare room to be an enclosure if any of them got close.
