Callatya Moderator The girl's got crabs! Posts: 9662 Kudos: 5261 Registered: 16-Sep-2001 | Good luck Lindy! Its pretty bad, us non-smokers don't know how good we have it in Australia. Even in restaurants and food prep areas over here there are people puffing away on thumping great cigars. its revolting! I am torn between increasing my risk of lung cancer or sitting outside in the freezing cold weather Either way I can't taste a damn thing because my nose is either being assaulted by ciggie fumes or frozen solid I can't wait to come home! |

Calla, even as a smoker I think I would join you out in the cold to get away from cigar smoke. Blech! Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes. Needing to wash your hair every day because of the cigar smoke isn't fun. I went to pub trivia on tues night and had a sore throat the next day because of cig smoke even though it is confined to one area - that area leaks! I realised how much I had become used to a smoke free zone when I travelled overseas. Just a few years ago smoking was allowed in restaurants here in Australia and now it shocks me. I am so glad it was outlawed, my rellies used to light up BETWEEN COURSES! Breathe deep when you can. Travel safely friend. ~~~ My fish blow kisses at me all day long ~~~ |

Lindy Administrator Show me the Shishies! Posts: 1507 Kudos: 1350 Votes: 730 Registered: 25-Apr-2001 | Day 4 & 5 I kinda had a couple.. well half of a couple.. it was the weekend. Adrian left them on the kitchen bench and they were calling me. So I had a couple. Then I went and smacked Adrian over the head with a fish net and told him to hide them away from me. Smokers are only allowed to smoke behind the garden shed now so that 'trying to be non smokers' dont smell it! So Day one starts again tomorrow. Lindy maybe you could try the patch. It worked for me. ___________________________________________ If at first you DO succeed, try not to look astonished. |

LITTLE_FISH ***** Little Fish ***** Master of Something Posts: 7303 Kudos: 1997 Votes: 670 Registered: 20-May-2005 | Lindy, You probably know that, but it takes the average smoke-stopper quite a few tries until he/she succeeds, don't let the current setback bring you down. On the other hand: WHAT WERE YOU THINKING The patch did absolutely nothing for me. I had it on my arm, then pulled it off to have a smoke, and put it back on when done . Stupid me Ingo |

Lindy Administrator Show me the Shishies! Posts: 1507 Kudos: 1350 Votes: 730 Registered: 25-Apr-2001 | A pack of 30 costs $12 here. I am thinking I may try the gum because I will be able to grab one and chew when ever I feel like I'm about to implode from lack of nicotene. I am going to start putting the money I save aside. It will probably end up on bills though. I think I would be like you Ingo and take the patch off for a smoke. Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes. moondog Moderator The Hobnob-lin Posts: 2676 Kudos: 1038 Votes: 4366 Registered: 30-Sep-2002 | i think the patch and the gum are just substitutes that change your habit from one form to another. i mean, you might as well chew tobacco if you need nicotine that bad. i would highly advise against going to the gum or patch if you want to be serious about quitting. imo, the best way to quit is just stop smoking and do your absolute best to not give in to the temptations. i know it's very hard, but when you get a craving try to find something else to do besides smoke. eventually the craving goes away and you might find something constructive to do with your time instead "That's the trouble with political jokes in this country... they get elected!" -- Dave Lippman |

Babelfish Administrator Small Fry with Ketchup Posts: 6833 Kudos: 8324 Votes: 1570 Registered: 17-Apr-2003 | During my weekend job I air rebroadcasts of this doctors show, so I get to hear a lot of the studies done on one thing or another. Smoking does come up a lot, and IMO I think it can be extended to other addictions and habits. Many of the studies found that the people that had the most success at stopping smoking were the ones that did it cold turkey (or turkey substitute for the veggies and vegans among us ). Just like moondog said, it's just a replacement and how do you further step down. When I was working on my really bad caffeine addiction I did have to use pain killers for the migraines, but I also found that orange juice first thing in the morning helped, as did a good 20 minutes cycling at the gym. I know with the two little ones you dont really have that luxury. And I do know various addictions are different, but maybe you can involve the boys to help you stay clean. Every time you get a craving read a story or do some crazy jumping jacks with them (yes I realize this wont work at 11 at night )...something to get the mind and body off the craving. Another thing might be to look up support groups in the area, I remember hearing that those were found to be a good help as well. Probably not much of a help but i know you can be strong !!! Side note ...bills so good that the rolly eye smiley is back! we need it for that ! . ^_^ |

Lindy Administrator Show me the Shishies! Posts: 1507 Kudos: 1350 Votes: 730 Registered: 25-Apr-2001 | The patches and gum are replacements to the real thing but without the numerous bad chemicals that come with ciggies. There are different strengths of patches and gum and you work your way down to the lower ones over time. I guess patches and gum are used to stop the habit more than anything as this is what alot of smoker miss when trying to quit. Everyone handles things differently, I wish I was one that could go cold turkey with no problems. During the day is not the problem for me, I am very occupied! Its after the kids are in bed that I start to go a little nuts and actually have the time to think about it. I'm back into quitting again. 2 days in! Hopefully I can stick it out longer than 4 days this time. Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes. That way you're a mile away and you have their shoes. |

Light_Bright Moderator Posts: 1156 Kudos: 1403 Votes: 351 Registered: 16-Jan-2002 | I have quit with the patch. When I talked to my Dr. and told her that I still crave sometimes she told me to slap another patch on before I get so bad I light up a smoke, that the patch was better than starting smoking again. The patch works like training wheels for me....slow but sure. After smoking for 30 years weaning myself off slowly was the answer for me. ___________________________________________ If at first you DO succeed, try not to look astonished. |

pookiekiller12 Fish Addict Posts: 574 Kudos: 633 Votes: 41 Registered: 13-Apr-2004 | As a nursing student, thank you for quitting. the cost on society is terrific. The healthcare that the people can not afford goes on for years. these people are a big strain on their families trying to care for them. And the sad part, most of these peoples kids(as adults) also smoke despite seeing its horrors, This lowers the quality of living for the ill person and their family. It increases health care costs. It also damages people in the room subjected to smoke. My wife quit when we got married. I loved her and respected her before that. But quitting was a statement to me that she wanted to live with me and love me more than she wanted to continue her addiction. I have lost 4 grandparents to tobacco. I do believe that it will be my parents downfall also. Smoking is damaging to the lungs and esophagus. It is also a leading cause of meny other cancers, including bladder cancer of all things. Awesome choice, Lindy. |
