I quit! | |
Lindy Administrator Show me the Shishies! Posts: 1507 Kudos: 1350 Votes: 730 Registered: 25-Apr-2001 | A pack of 30 costs $12 here. I am thinking I may try the gum because I will be able to grab one and chew when ever I feel like I'm about to implode from lack of nicotene. I am going to start putting the money I save aside. It will probably end up on bills though. I think I would be like you Ingo and take the patch off for a smoke. Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes. moondog Moderator The Hobnob-lin Posts: 2676 Kudos: 1038 Votes: 4366 Registered: 30-Sep-2002 | i think the patch and the gum are just substitutes that change your habit from one form to another. i mean, you might as well chew tobacco if you need nicotine that bad. i would highly advise against going to the gum or patch if you want to be serious about quitting. imo, the best way to quit is just stop smoking and do your absolute best to not give in to the temptations. i know it's very hard, but when you get a craving try to find something else to do besides smoke. eventually the craving goes away and you might find something constructive to do with your time instead "That's the trouble with political jokes in this country... they get elected!" -- Dave Lippman |

Smoking does come up a lot, and IMO I think it can be extended to other addictions and habits. Many of the studies found that the people that had the most success at stopping smoking were the ones that did it cold turkey (or turkey substitute for the veggies and vegans among us ). Just like moondog said, it's just a replacement and how do you further step down. When I was working on my really bad caffeine addiction I did have to use pain killers for the migraines, but I also found that orange juice first thing in the morning helped, as did a good 20 minutes cycling at the gym. I know with the two little ones you dont really have that luxury. And I do know various addictions are different, but maybe you can involve the boys to help you stay clean. Every time you get a craving read a story or do some crazy jumping jacks with them (yes I realize this wont work at 11 at night )...something to get the mind and body off the craving. Another thing might be to look up support groups in the area, I remember hearing that those were found to be a good help as well. Probably not much of a help but i know you can be strong !!! Side note ...bills so good that the rolly eye smiley is back! we need it for that ! . ^_^ |

There are different strengths of patches and gum and you work your way down to the lower ones over time. I guess patches and gum are used to stop the habit more than anything as this is what alot of smoker miss when trying to quit. Everyone handles things differently, I wish I was one that could go cold turkey with no problems. During the day is not the problem for me, I am very occupied! Its after the kids are in bed that I start to go a little nuts and actually have the time to think about it. I'm back into quitting again. 2 days in! Hopefully I can stick it out longer than 4 days this time. Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes. That way you're a mile away and you have their shoes. |

When I talked to my Dr. and told her that I still crave sometimes she told me to slap another patch on before I get so bad I light up a smoke, that the patch was better than starting smoking again. The patch works like training wheels for me....slow but sure. After smoking for 30 years weaning myself off slowly was the answer for me. ___________________________________________ If at first you DO succeed, try not to look astonished. |

He wouldn't listen to me. But a trip to St. Vincent's and two stints later he hasn't touched a ciggarette since. They gave him a presc The best of luck to you. |

Lindy Administrator Show me the Shishies! Posts: 1507 Kudos: 1350 Votes: 730 Registered: 25-Apr-2001 | maybe thinking about what you might not have to go through could be an incentive? I've mentioned that in my first post. It is my incentive and why when I failed after day 3 I started again straight away. Thanks for the reminder though. pookiekiller12 Fish Addict Posts: 574 Kudos: 633 Votes: 41 Registered: 13-Apr-2004 | As a nursing student, thank you for quitting. the cost on society is terrific. The healthcare that the people can not afford goes on for years. these people are a big strain on their families trying to care for them. And the sad part, most of these peoples kids(as adults) also smoke despite seeing its horrors, This lowers the quality of living for the ill person and their family. It increases health care costs. It also damages people in the room subjected to smoke. My wife quit when we got married. I loved her and respected her before that. But quitting was a statement to me that she wanted to live with me and love me more than she wanted to continue her addiction. I have lost 4 grandparents to tobacco. I do believe that it will be my parents downfall also. Smoking is damaging to the lungs and esophagus. It is also a leading cause of meny other cancers, including bladder cancer of all things. Awesome choice, Lindy. |

They say that quitting often takes a couple of attempts. You just have to restart again, and not dwell on any relapse that might occur every now & then. Keep positive Cheers TW |

longhairedgit Fish Guru Lord of the Beasts Posts: 2502 Kudos: 1778 Votes: 29 Registered: 21-Aug-2005 | Maybe change to roll ups first? Sometimes it can take the pace out of smoking, and then you can begin to cut down gently.Plus you can just smoke parts of a rolly and make a few fags last a whole day instead of piling away packs of filters. Failing that I find a hundred weight of mint imperials helps .lol. Last time I gave up smoking I gained 3 stone, have since decided its healthier to smoke and weigh 13 stone rather than be smoke free and weigh 16 stone If you really want to quit im sure you will, I sense you have the willpower, but it helps to cut down stress in other areas of your life too, before beginning. Lets be honest, as far as addictions go, smoking is in the little leagues. Some of us have given up far worse things in the past than smoking! My dad has a rather weird regime that works for him, he basically quit about 15 years ago, except he allows himself one cigarette every wednesday. I guess thats quitting to the point that it makes no difference anymore. Good luck, and dont take setbacks too hard. Its just quitting in progress. |

Its damned hard though! I've done it before when pregnant. (I was silly and went back to it after. ) At the moment I am getting through the day with none, but as soon as the other half gets home I have one. I'm trying to change the way I handle stress which there can be lots of with a 3yo in the house! Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes.
