That happens to me all the time. The first time was a few years ago, and it happened when was surfing and was about 100 yards from the shore. It hurt sooooo bad, and I could barely swim because of the pain. The waves were pretty rough as well, and I seriously thought I was going to drown. Needless to say, when I limped back onto the sand, I was in tears, not only because I could have died, but because the pain was still unbearable. It hurt for the rest of the day.

It is hard to describe the kind of pain it is... The best I can do is that one of the muscles or tendons in your leg snaps out of place and overlaps or gets "caught" on another muscle/tendon. I'm not exactly sure if that's really what happens, but that's what it feels like to me. In fact, that day when it happened to me in the water, I was actually pushing and squeezing my leg to get the muscle "back into place".

I know it isn't from lack of sodium, as pretty much all the foods I eat are pretty high in salt. I'll take salt over sugar any day...

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

superlion - its funny that you mention
I suffer from leg cramps often... I usually get them when I'm sleeping though.

Brings back some memories of being woken up in the middle of the night to my hubby screaming bloody murder about his legs cramping!

Glad that doesn't happen anymore. Of course now that I mention it, will probably happen soon.

I get that after working too much and drinking lots of coffee.

I think I'm getting too old to be working my hours .

Drink plenty of water. The problems that cause cramping and twitching are partly due to mineral imbalances, but your body will even them out if you get plenty of fluids. There isn't really much you can do about it now that it hurts except wear loose pants and massage it occasionally.

I suffer from leg cramps often... I usually get them when I'm sleeping though. They almost always wake me up, but sometimes I just wake up with a sore leg and know it cramped in the middle of the night.

Cally thats weird that you bring this up, because just the other night I stretched in bed when I woke up and the muscle in my left calf randomly started screaming; for a second I wanted to cry b/c it was so unbearable but after 10-15 seconds it did go away, though it still feels sore. Really weird.

Good luck with the B12, its either going to work brilliantly or not at all from what i've heard. I hope it fixees you up and you can get on with things

I think i have some magnesium tablets somewhere. That was what was ringing bells
It would make more sense than salts at the moment as i'm pretty heavy on the fast food at the moment (cooking is hard in this heat, and it makes the house too hot)

I have had these before, and once or twice its woken me from sleep, which is not pleasant... thank goodness i don't sleep in my old bunk bed anymore! i would have given myself a concussion!

Magnesium is supposed to be an issue in CFS and can cause muscle cramping and pain, apparently. I might be getting that with my B12 injections, or at least I will be starting some kind of Mg tablet. I get muscle cramping and spasms a lot, I find elevating my legs a bit while I'm sleeping with a pillow helps. After it happens, massage usually helps a lot, so does heat packs and stretching. I also take methocarbamol, a muscle relaxant, with some tylenol to help with pain from that when I get it. Good luck.

Magnesium is ringing bells... *ponders* for someone who is horribly afraid of doctors, its very tempting to get a full workup done just to see, but alas, my fear and loathing prevails

I'm going to read up on the CFS thing too, maybethere is something specific thats commonly at low levels, i'll try that first.

I woke up yesterday, and stetched a little, at which point my calf muscle cramped up so badly that i was in tears

I didn't even stretch much, i just pointed my toe out a little

I was rolling around on the bed in some serious pain and had to get Jerry to come in and rub it out a little.

So now its the day after... and i feel somewhat like someone who has been whacked in the leg with a sledgehammer

Its still very painful

WHAT HAPPENNED???

how do i make it better???

Heh, I was told it was Magnesium At some point last year I had a twitching muscle in my eyelid, it was hardly noticable for others but it annoyed the hell out of me and it went on for several weeks. Then someone came with the bright idea to try magnesium pills as she had major muscle cramps all the time when she was younger and doctors had told her it was magnesium deficiency. So I bought the pills, took the first one in the evening and and the twitch was gone the next morning.

Callatya, the pain you now have is just ordinary muscle pain, similar to what you get when you have a hard workout, it'll fade away in the next few days

My husband get this all the time - well not so much anymore. He had a lack of sodium. Make sure you are getting enough salt, and therefore you will also need to make sure you are drinking enough water. My husband has not had this problem in quite awhile now.

I've been told elsewhere it was the sodium

Crud.

I'm either going to make it better or worse

Where are our resident biologists? Cell salts etc, which ones are cramping indicitive of deficiencies in???

I did a very similar thing late last year. It was the worst cramp I have ever had. Now for the bad news I actually tore deep below & into the muscle in three places. How to fix it? I went to a good physo for treatment, it took three visits. I know how you feel it is BBBB very painfull and extremly inconveinent.

Hi Calla,
Sometimes ya just can't ever win...

When I was much younger my parents called them "growing
pains." To me, they were instant agony. Now, more years
than I care to count, I still get them, frequently at night.
Now my wife says its "old age" creeping up on me.
Ya Just Can't Win...

I find that stretching my foot on the hurting limb,
out and upward relaxes the agony nearly instantly.
I've no idea why these calf muscles cramp like that.
Sometimes I have aches in the calf afterwards but at
least the agony is gone.

Frank
