Hi all,

Just interested on your opinions of the new Aussie tourist add that mentions that word starting with a "b", not sure if i'm allowed to say it so I wont.

Is it really that offensive?

So where the bloody hell are you

Interesting that the brits gripe on "bloody" and the americans and canadians gripe on "hell", neither of which are considered even remotely bad to us.

Having said that, I'd be more interested to hear what the average citizen has to say about it, rather than the political and religious groups.

is it an internal or external ad?

Do you mean the one with the guy with the really obnoxious stereotypical Aussie accent which ends with a thing about the Henley Regatta?

It features a very pretty young girl who at the end of the add says "where the bloody hell are you". Maybe they have censored it in the UK already?

I,ve seen the ad in its full uncensored glory on british tv and to my knowledge it hasn't bothered anyone, lets face it where the hell do people think the word bloody originated.

Gibson SG you know you want one!!

I guess as an American who has never been abroad the implication of the word "bloody" escapes me. I would have no clue as to whether or not this was considered offensive. The word "hell" is only offensive to the extreme relgious nuts who, for them, think of this as the worst possible connotation of somewhere to be...for the rest of us it is just figurative of a not so good place. This ad is not offensive at all....I rather think it's kind of neat that the board of tourism in Oz is wondering where the "bloody hell" I am and why I'm not there yet!

Now, if I should happen to strike it rich at any time in the future....I'm there!

ahhh a telly ad. I dont watch much telly, so I've not seen it.

Bloody hell is not really that offensive, it's just impolite. It has quite violent connotations, which can upset people, especially older people. It is quite offensive to many WWII veterans, for historical reasons which don't really make sense to people who weren't part of that generation.

If it has been censored in the uk Id find it particularly ironic, since generally we swear probably more than any other nation on earth. Youd be hard pressed to find anyone who doesnt use the f word with some regularity under the age of 50... Besides, compared to the vast menu of sex and violence on the telly on any given day, Id be surprised if it upset anyone. I suppose the term bloody has a religious context for some people , but since the uk now quotes "jedi" as the religion that most people confess to when pressed for an answer, I suppose even the religious types who might be offended will be few and far between.

I think the frankness of the australian people is what endears them to a lot of british people. We wouldnt have them any other way

Our nanny state government strikes again.

All I can say it is extremly good advertising. Get it banned, kick up stink more publicity. Perfect advertising.

If it is good enough for "Charlie" to say "BL***Y on TV why not the Aussies we proberly got it from them in the first place. Any way it a way of life in Aussie land.

Nice ad. I liked some of the other ones they aired better though. Wish I could find them still ...if anything should get pulled from american TV it should be that pizza hut or whatever commercial .

And they really need a melbourne, sydney, brisbane package starting at $900 ...

.
Okay back to being serious, how to aussies feel about the portrayal of their country in that ad and on the various (non aussie) tourism sites?

^_^

I swear like a sailor so thats pretty tame for me

I know the 'shrimp on the barbie' ad was successful, but that was plain embarrassing IMO I mean, there is a difference between shrimp and prawns, and a lot of people call shrimp 'cherubin' and they are really only inland, and I believe that ad was based in a coastal scene. Probably a fishkeeper gripe, but still its a bit too much playing up the ocker stereotype.
Besides, people were coming over expecting the country to be like it was in Crocodile Dundee! Er, hello? You'd have to travel a fair way out to get that, and even then you may end up with more Donks than Micks. Nothing like the movie (its better!)

I say a quick snippet of the girl in the ad being asked about all the fuss, and her response was something like "they should bloody get over themselves" or something similar I like her already.

I can understand Canada not screening it during kid's TV shows, I think thats fair. Adults should be able to let their kids watch G rated programs without worrying about possible language issues that they may not agree with.

I found it VERY interesting that a few places have decided to screen "where the hell are you?" without the bloody. I honestly thought that people would have more issue with 'hell' than 'bloody'... Bloody is on a par with bugger as far as i'm concerned.

Yeah I'm surprised places would air it without bloody...I always saw it as cute or funny ...coudnt see how it was a curse word (kinda like Bu&&er) it just seems like a harmless curse word.

*shrug*
