Frustrated and impatient, I sometimes wandered about aimlessly for hours; I felt as though something were missing. Misadventures with woodwork; geological ineptitude; mechanical mediocrity, and the eventual black- hole of a gamer's paradise. There had to be an alternative vice; a savior of sorts. One day......it came to me.

There is certain peace in what we do. A calmness in an underwater world; filled with dense forests, lurking caves, and wild beasts. A slow dance, a vindicating ripple, and a crystal satisfaction. I have found what I searched for, and I am satisfied...at last.

Why did you choose your aquatic sanctuary?

It looks like I have too kick this one on too.

My reason is very simple I am just interested in all fish. Weather I am looking at, catching, eating, or just plain old learning more about them.

Now that should stir up a few comments.

Although I love all creatures I never really had any interest in keeping fish, I thought it was a stupid waste of time
Until a neighbour gave us a little 2ft tank she kept 4 goldies in that had died (she was an old time cleaner- empty tank, scrub everything til it was spotless and fill it all back up again).. we ended up putting goldies in it as well until we learnt from sites like this that we were doing the wrong thing and got a 3ft tank.
From there I fell in love with a BGK and built my next tank around him
Now we have a room full of tanks and not too many days that at least one tank has to be cleaned but there isn't a day that I'm sorry about how many tanks\fish that we have

Its my relaxation.
After Ryan has gone to bed for his afternoon nap I feed the fish and sit back and watch the cories nibble on their food and sit on their rock with full bellies, the endlers chase and dance around each other and the pleco scurry over when he realises there is food to be had.

Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes. That way you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

Why did I get into it?

Well it's simple. I was living in a place where I could not have pets, but I talked my landlord into letting me have a small fish tank.

I soon got tired of the 15 gal not being big enough to house much in it so I up graded to a 40 ...

Now I have MTS (multiple tank syndrome) My list is as follows.

55
55
40
20
15
10
10
1gal Betta=20

Jamie got into it because of hearing me talk of my fish and this site. Yes her tanks are included in that list. We just set Cody (our son) up with is first 10 gal in his room.

Growing up I lived in the same house, 20+ years. My dad had a 55g built into a basement wall. I just remember it always being there, kind of like a comfort thing. My dad died 6 years ago...I don't know, maybe it sounds crazy but when I'm working with my tanks I feel it's some sort of connection with him.

Also growing up I always wanted a pet of my own, so when I was 15 I bought my first betta.

Last Xmas I got my first tank, a 29g kit from my spouse, and like many other I've been addicted ever since. My kids live with their dad, but my oldest son has a 2.5g Mini-bow and my girls have a 10g in their room. Passing on the hobby I suppose.

My kids ask lots of questions about my tanks and fish when they're here, quite intelligent questions too. They're learning species names, about compatability, tank maintenance.

Last night my oldest was asking about getting an ADF, so we were searching my 10g where I keep one. Each of us with faces pressed to opposite ends of the tank commented at the same time this is so cool, it's like actually being underwater with the fish. Maybe that sounds strange too but it made me feel great.

There is nothing like turning out the lights in the house, sitting with a coffee and the music going, watching the tanks. The fish in their own little world. Also, I like the challenge. Someone gives me a sick betta, taking care of him and giving him a good home. Sometimes they are too far gone to help but we try. This hobby is something that my daughter and I can share. We get to the lfs and both go nuts...hence the addition of two new apple snails last night (Fred and Ginger)

I actually first started to spite my parents. I've always been really into nature and animals. When I was a baby, and my parents wanted to quiet my down, they'd sit me in front of a bouquet of flowers, where I'd sit for hours. It stands to reason that I'd always be asking for a new pet. I've had quite a few in my lifetime, including a tarantula, hermit craps, geckos, and anole lizards. My latest thing was getting a bird. My parents had had some before my older sis was born, but gave them away because she was eating their poop. Don't worry, I have better taste. My sis and I went to a carnival almost 2 years ago (wow!), and won a goldfish. I mostly wanted it just because my parents had pretty much forbidden more pets.

I went through the whole bowl thing with the goldie before finding FP and giving her away to a person with a pond. I got a 20 gallon, and went from there. In fact, just today I got a 135 gallon. That brings the tank count up to...9? Yes, I think it's 9.

I like fishkeeping because it gives you a little power, I guess. You're in control of a little world in there. I also love just watching the fish. They're just amazing. I like the challenge, whether it is treating a sick fish or breeding a new one.

They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.
