Joe Potato Fish Addict Kind of a Big Deal Posts: 869 Votes: 309 Registered: 09-Jan-2001 | You know, James, someday you're going to get tagged by one of your more exotic pets and Hirsty is going to have to come on here and say "EH UP! Mez is dead." In any event, nice acquisitions. And Calla, what happened to your really big boots? |

Mez Ultimate Fish Guru Asian Hardfeather Enthusiast Posts: 3300 Votes: 162 Registered: 23-Feb-2001 | Ok here we go. First up, Calla, is the brown tree snake, boiga irregularis, not to be hit by any shovel thankyou! He is lovely natured, even though WC, is a lovely snake and "dosnt bite" she says. Lets hope not http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t72/james_meehan/boiga_irregularis002.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t72/james_meehan/boiga_irregularis005.jpg Ok, so some of you will know those from australia.. This is my chequered Keelback, xenochrophis piscator, also rear fanged... http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t72/james_meehan/xenochrophispiscator003.jpg and just to prove it isnt a stupid little garter snake... http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t72/james_meehan/xenochrophispiscator002.jpg Any thoughts? The snakes look healthy, I gather the gal is your girl friend, and the plants in that cage on the branch look real healthy too. I guess somebody's gotta keep them as "pets." Better you than me! Keep that anti-venom handy just in case! Frank -->>> The Confidence of Amateurs, is the Envy of Professionals <<<-- |

Callatya Moderator The girl's got crabs! Posts: 9662 Kudos: 5261 Registered: 16-Sep-2001 | *hides shovel behind her back* Are you absolutely certain? you don't think it'd look better sans head and hung over the fence? Ohhh OK, its not a bad looking creature, but please don't be getting bitten. I guess at least it isn't a tiger or a common brown. Probably trickier to get a shovel on something in a tree anyhow... *sigh* Hey, why, when there are plenty of non-venomous snakes around, do you want ones that could kill or damage you? Snakes are OK, but why the bitey ouchy venomous ones? Is it a size thing or a behaviour thing or just fun to taunt people with? I took the boots off for a bit, they were pinching my toes. I'm considering just wearing slippers around the place at the moment Bit of R&R. |

Mez Ultimate Fish Guru Asian Hardfeather Enthusiast Posts: 3300 Votes: 162 Registered: 23-Feb-2001 | they certainly are not to taunt people. rear fanged snakes generally come with a lot of attitude and really cool looks, whereas a lot of the commonly available stuff is just boring. you know anyone thats been bitten by a brown tree snake? |

FRANK Moderator Posts: 5108 Kudos: 5263 Votes: 1690 Registered: 28-Dec-2002 | Yah, but Desertfish, those are "Front Wheel Drive" critters! I guess the Rear Wheel Drive ones are less of a threat? Frank -->>> The Confidence of Amateurs, is the Envy of Professionals <<<-- |

Brengun Big Fish Posts: 355 Kudos: 187 Votes: 110 Registered: 22-Jun-2007 | I don't mind snakes and I even admire some but the nasty King Brown snake we have here is not one I like. It can be extremely agressive but it is nice that it likes to commit suicide and jump under your shovel just as you are digging in the garden. Callatya, thats what you mean't wasn't it, since brown snakes are a protected species in Australia and you aren't allowed to intentionally kill them? |

Adams been chased by more than his fair share though. ^_^ |

Brengun Big Fish Posts: 355 Kudos: 187 Votes: 110 Registered: 22-Jun-2007 | Babelfish, the taipan is very poorly dispositioned and is short in temper. They are also very deadly in venom which acts very, very fast. Never, never mess with a Taipan. Oh by the way, yesterday one of those silly accident e brown snakes fell under my shovel in the backyard, right where my kids and dogs usually play. |

Mez Ultimate Fish Guru Asian Hardfeather Enthusiast Posts: 3300 Votes: 162 Registered: 23-Feb-2001 | yeah taipans bite badly, especially the inland taipans.. May get flamed for this, but you dont need to be killing those snakes. throw (from a distance) a plastic tub over it or something, and call a "snake rescue" person - i know the exist, ive seen them on the telly |

Then you'd have to mark your yard and the house, and then the room they're in and have them in a locked cage. |
