I'm with RSCutiePie, my wisdom teeth story is a horror. I'll keep it to myself incase I scare anyone out of having them removed.

Tristianity...don't worry it isn't that bad...

I had two of mine removed. Both were so badly impacted they were almost upside down/sideways (yes, it was strange to see the xrays; dentist couldn't figure it out herself)

I was awake the whole time, and only received shots (multiples, everytime I flinched, she shot me again) and to numb me for the shots she used a throat spray numsit stuff).

Yes, hearing the drill and cracking of the tooth (they had to come out in pieces) was a horrible sound. When I had to drive over to the next "village/town" later that afternoon I had some pain (I still blame the altitude change on this).

Truely the worst was the fact that my jaws seemed permantly closed for the first few days (I could only seem to open my mouth an inch or so). But I was able to eat normal food, cut into tiny pieces that evening.

I was not on anything other than a antidissinfectant mouth wash, and Aleve (750 mgs...3 times a day for swelling, and pain).

It's not bad, though about a month ago a piece of root managed to work it's way out, I've been told to expect that because she couldn't get all the root without removing my jaw...:%):%))

I hope I don't have to get mine removed. I think I can recall my orthodontist saying that they had enough room to come in.

My teeth are very sensitive to everything (getting my braces off was one of the most painful events in my life), so the thought of getting four teeth pulled or surgically removed terrifies me.

Trystianity-don't be frightened... all 4 of mine were impacted and I had no problems afterwards. Had them surgically removed when I was 17 and my dentist gave me 8 shots of novocaine (2 per tooth) and laughing gas (which isn't that bad). That evening I sat on the downstairs bathroom counter to eat because I was still too numb to find my mouth with the spoon. But 2 days of eating mashed potatoes and jell-o and I was fine. Had to avoid sticky stuff for a few weeks and really cold stuff because that area was sensitive for a month or so but other than that it was fine. I was off pain meds by Sun and I had the surgery Thurs afternoon. So don't worry so much about it.

-Beth

p.s. Moondog, hope your feeling good... remember to eat mushy stuff for a few days so as not to hurt your newly healing gums.

sorry trystianity, I was exaggerating slightly

Yes there was swelling and I felt pretty grotty for a few days but it's not as bad as you're obviously thinking!

SIX MONTHS LATER????

thanks whetu, now I'm horribly frightened

All 4 of my teeth are impacted, they said I'll have to be put under and get them all surgically removed. Hence the cost.

You people are really freaking me out

I thought of you Moondog as soon as I saw this photo a good set of jaws and teeth.

Good to see you are on the mend.

I got all four of my wisdom teeth out at once. One of them was badly impacted and had to be cut into pieces to be removed. I had it done under a local (I couldn't afford anything else) and just kept thinking of the money I was saving... better than nitrous!

I had good friends who put my food through a blender until I could eat properly six months later

Had mine out and didn't go under either - and all I had was locals ... And maxed out on those on one of my teether ... hurt like you would not believe - I couldn't get numb and kept jumping when he hit my nerve ... feeling the breaking of each tooth sent me over the edge ... BUT - I would not go under - I refused to ... don't do things like that happily. But I healed quick - was at work, working the next day

Good luck with yours and have a speedy recovery!

it makes any other drugs you have work much more effectively too, pretty freaky stuff.

Not only does it "take your brain" away, it takes it, throws it in a blender, and then dumps it down the sink (meaning it does permanent damage).

chris: these stitches apparently dissolve after a week or so, no problem with having them removed later

natalie: yes, nitrous is bad, but dentists have been using it for many many many years (i had it when i had teeth pulled for my braces as a teenager). it's just used to "take your brain away" so that you don't feel the pain of the novocain needles (or other stuff) for the operation. but this dentist was *really* good with the needles, i barely felt the first 2 and the last 2 shots, and i got 12 total

...in about 90 minutes. the dentist assures me that i don't need to go under, just some nitrous and novocain will do it. hopefully he's right. i've talked to some people and the vast majority of the ones who didn't go under had no problems the next day, so i'm crossing my fingers for that possibility

All I can say I am glad its you and not me.

Any way all the best.

i got perkacet(spell) when mine came out. WOW, that stuff is strong. take a pill go to sleep, wake up, take a pill, go to sleep. did that for three days.

on tip i will give you. do not bend over or even get out of be or thou shall bust your stiches. i busted 3 of mine and the skin started to heal over them and they hurt very badly being pulled out.

and by the way, have fun with the cotton balls in your mouth.

chris

i started with nitrous but i started feeling *really* anxious once it started kicking in i told them to stop and they did and the rest went just fine except for that endless drilling on the last tooth anyway....

Mine was a horror story too and I took everything they could give me Started with laughing gas, then novocaine, and finally I was knocked out I had to be carried out of the oral surgeon's office and I also reacted badly to the Tylenol 3s. It was a long time before I went near a dentist after that

Babel, sounds like you react to sulfa drugs-- I had the same reaction after my teeth came out. Nausea, rashes, and I didn't sleep for a full 48 hours afterward. It was not a pretty sight.

Glad you're still feeling ok, moondog!
