From what I know the names were always pretty synonomous - I remember reading the term 'middle school' in American books when I was a kid.

Or maybe Junior High is actually Canadian (thinking 'Degrassi Junior High' here!)

In Victoria Aust

Some Secondary (old technical and high schools combined) actualy do have a junior and senior section senior for year 11 and 12 only.

Way way back 1940s there were some schools called "Central"
This was the for grades 5 & 6 before they went into technical or high schools. Most highschools worked on a selection list from the primary schools. The technical schools also had a examination before you could go there.

If students failed they went to another lower level (can not think of name sorry) I think they were called consolitated schools. This term is still used today but it refers to a totally different system.

Looks like I am showing my age here 68 next month.

Heck, my school didn't have any junior high/middle school. Our school has 2 buildings, one for K-6, the other for 7-12. No silly putzing around with all this middle school garbage.

You have that show there? That's kimd of embarassing.

It is called Junior High here where there are separate schools. The school I went to started at kindergarten and went to grade 8. I had friends at other schools (and family in other towns) that got a Junior High experience but I missed out.

I've never heard "middle school" used here.

Since when did junior high in America become middle school. If this is indeed what has happened. There is a renaming? Why? When? What do Americans think?

Our system is different here in Australia, no such thing as junior high. It always sounded cool. And I just noticed that there are now references to middle school here and there.

Meh, we use junior high around here, usually. We have schools around here that are K-8 (usually private schools), then the K-5 elementary, 6-8 junior high, 9-12 high school. *shrugs* I've heard the terms middle school and junior high flip-flopped, but generally we use junior high here. *shrugs some more*

Degrassi it was so lame... I loved it at the time. Snake, Spike (what a shock with Spike!)

So this junior high thing seems to be region dependent so far as I can make out. It is quite confusing isn't it?

i'm gonna stick my nose in here if it's ok

I've taught across texas and attended school across texas, and in all honesty I think it is what the school district decides to call it, as to what it really is

I attended:

PreK-3 elementary
4-5 intermediate
6-8 middle school
9-12 high school

I've taught/student taught in 5 districts here is what they have/had:

Marathon, Presidio, La Porte, Goose Creek, Houston (I believe) PreK-5 elementary

La Porte: doesn't make sense, but who asked me 6th Grade Campus; 7-8 Grade Junior High

Goose Creek, and Houston: 6-8 middle school

Presidio now depending on when you were there depends on what grades were there 6-8 prior to 2000/2001 school year, since then it's been grades 5-8:%) it is called Franco Middle School, but also called Presidio Jr. High, it is the only M.S./Jr.H. in the town and the names flip flop...I don't think it will ever be called Presidio Middle Schoolsimply because the initials (and I know around here we use a lot of initials) would be PMS

Now for Presidio, La Porte, Goose Creek, Houston grades 9-12 are High School. I know of one school district in the area where they isolate 9th graders on their own campusin all honesty i think 8th and 9th should be shoved together:%)

Now for those that have noticed I stopped with Marathon after grade 5. It isn't that we sacrificed them to those unknown or ran over them or what have you it is simply that this is a very very very tiny school district. They still play 6 man football (the kind of football where you throw the ball not kick it), and everyone knows everyone, literally The year I student taught there we had 98, yes 98 kids in grades PreK-12 the graduating class that year was 5 and I received a graduation invitation from all of them So with all that said from grades 6-12 you were considered High School

I can safely say I've taught in one of the smallest school districts here in Texas, and am currently teaching in the 4th, possibly the 3rd after this hurricane season largest school district in the US...

With all of that, i guess i'll just say it really kind of depends on where you live as to what it's calledLeslie also teaches in a MS and it's grades 6-8:%)

second sidewing 6-8
building 9-12, offices, cafeteria and library.

but I moved to the states and attended middleschool (6-8) for 8th grade in charlotte, then went to highschool.

Ohh yeah baby! i remember Degrassi!

I should also point out that our younger students would get confused at the term elementary not one we use.
We have 'primary' or 'public' (most schools are public anyway, its just that the primary schools stole the word for themselves )

Our high school actually was kind of divided into junior (8-10) and senior (11-12), but we were all in the same school - just had different coloured shirts and different privileges.

Yup, we had Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High - they were some of the best shows around in the 80s!

Hi,
When I went to school...
The Elementary School was (1-8) in one building and the
desks had ink wells built into them.

High School was 9-12 in one building.
Community College was two years, and the University
was 4 years with only "some" of your two year stuff
transferring.

I guess America is weird....we can't let our little darlings grow up too soon. here's what I had back in the day (20 years ago ) in Big Spring, Texas:

1-5th Elementary
6-7th Middle School
8th Junior High
9-12th High School

I have no idea why it was set up that way.....odd I guess although it didn't seem like it to us at the time.
