Hi,
Welcome to FP!

If they were coming from inside the tank,
generally speaking the flys/bugs go through a
stage where they would be "worm like" creatures in
the water. At that point they would be "live food"
for the fish and I would think you would have noticed
them by now.

Another choice is that they are attracted to the light
and tank, by the light, heat, and moisture, within that
area. Depending upon your tank maintenance, vacuum the
gravel, and then inspect the light fixture itself for
nests or maybe left over fish food (depending upon how
you feed them).

I suspect your tank/light fixture has become an attraction
to the bugs.

Do you have potted plants in your house?

If so check on those fellas when you water them to see if little flys come out. If so it has nothing to do with your tank. We had this problem a while back, if i remember correctly its from over watering or egg infested soil (even brand new soil) and as was stated they are attracted to light.

It was quite hard to get rid of them for us as we had tons of plants and they will spread very fast. Try drying out your plants first before any extreme measures (repotting, bleaching pots etc.) as this will "starve" the little pests.

If the answer is no to all this I am not sure what it could be. Seen the post and thought i'd try this route.

Good luck hopefully you find out what they are.

Tusker,

You probably have springtails. They are not large enought to break the surface tension of the water and will love your aquarium if you have plants that grow to the surface. Annoying but not a problem.
