Water quality in Brisbane - Experiences? | |
Hayley Small Fry Posts: 1 Kudos: 1 Votes: 13 Registered: 07-Aug-2007 | Hi All, As most Australian members know - we're smack bang in the middle of a pretty serious water crisis. Brisbane dam levels are currently sitting at approximately 17.55% capacity and falling each week and I've been led to believe we're heading for level 6 water restrictions next month (not too sure what that entails as yet). Are there any Brisbane (or other) members out there who may have changed some of their water changing habits since things started getting serious? I'm also of the understanding different chemicals are added to our water up to every three hours - just to make it safe for us to drink I'm considering purchasing water from the supermarket each week? Does anyone have any opinions or ideas to throw out there on the subject? Is there anyone out there (or someone that you know of) who has given fish keeping away because of our current circumstance. Any ideas as to how/if this may affect our LFS & $$ in the future? There's a few questions, I know, but I would like to change the way I do a few things (purely a personal choice)and am looking for ideas and opinions so I can consider the possibility of alternative resources for my addiction. By way of background I moved to Brisbane from Cairns 2 years ago. I have a 5ft tank which used to be alive with Cichlids (and now sits empty for the reasons above)However - I have been chomping at the bit wanting to get a decent tank up and running again (waiting for things to "get better" which I realise wont for a long time) so I have gone ahead and have started up my new 2ft planted tank and am yet to decide what I am going to put in there. The water & equipment is in and I'm now patiently waiting to reach the right parameters. Happy Days, H |

When you click on the Water Quality link, you will see in the right hand corner a box that says you are looking at the posts for the last two weeks. Click on that box and open it up. There you will see a post, started by Lindy on water quality in Australia. If you open it up further, to the last 6 months, you will see one on water quality in Sidney as well. You might want to read those as well as any responses to your current post. Frank -->>> The Confidence of Amateurs, is the Envy of Professionals <<<-- |

I know nothing about Brisbane water but depending on your exact location water can go through different water treatment plants for different areas. I am in Vic and we certainly have been having similar problems for several years now in fact as long as I have been in the area I am living 75klm south of Melb. What I do is store all my water for one week this can remove some of the nasties. I also double dose the stored water for chlorine at the moment, and I can see no reason to stop doing it. Some of the chemicals are designed to remove ALL bacteria in the water which means as soon as it is put into your tank a BIG MINI CYCLE will happen. To compensate this I add Sera Nitrivic there are other good brands I believe Tetra have an excellent product. A reliable LFS informed me the first thing you will notice the PH will go crazy. I also carry a supply of Melafix just in cast. As far as buying water unless you have mony to burn dont do it. Certainly do not use water collected from your roof as this will contain many nasties as well. I hope this helps you just remember there are plenty of Aussies going through the same thing and it is not an easy time.
