I'm trying to find some good black gravel for my 15 gallon that will be ok with cories. I found some at a local petstore but I'm not sure about it. It began with an "A" and had silica in its description. And in the intructions it said not to rinse too much or something would happen (curse my bad memory!!). So that worried me. It was about an eighth of an inch or smaller.

Also, I looked at the same gravel that was in a tank set up in the store. A lot of pieces had an orange coloration to them like the black had come off....

Hi,
Be cautious with the Black Gravel. A black material called
"Black Blast" is used in the sand blasting process. Its
actually a form of glass (silica) and has sharp edges much
like crushed glass. The sharp edges can injure your fish
and destroy the barbels on a cory. If you want a black
material, black tahitian sand or gravel might work.

Thank you! I'm glad I decided to check about it before buying it.

Pip,

If you like black, you can also use EcoComplete. It does not need to be rinsed as it is packed wet and is biologically active. That is, it will accelerate your ammonia/nitrite/nitrate cycle.

I bought some black gravel and now I have a constant supply of black dust in my aquarium. It's not too bad now, but the black slowly flakes off of the gravel. I may have to change it out eventually.
