I just got some java moss and fern. I was wondering if i could partially bury the moss in the gravel, so it would spread out like grass. Also would the java fern attach to drift wood? just another q. I have fertilized gravel and a 96 watt light, do i need anything, JUST to keep those 2 plants? I was told i dont need CO2 for them. Thanks for any comments.

Hi Ship,

No you don't need any co2 to keep those plants, actually those are both low light plants so you just need to throw them in.

Java moss won't grow if you burry it on the gravel, instead you can use something to weigh it down to the surface of the substrate, it will attach itself. What has worked for me is just to do a little ball with it, and just stuck it place with a border of driftwood or a rock.

Java fern will attach to any surface, just tie it in place with a cotton thread, in time the thread will decompose in the water but by the time, the java fern will be already attached.

good luck

You certainly will not Co2 for those plants. I no longer have Java Fern but I would tie them to wood or rocks using fine fishing line never a problem. It prefers not to be burried in the sub base.

Hi,
The earlier two posts address your specific plants, and
are good. If you want what is called a "carpet" plant
then you will have to increase your lighting (watts/gallon)
as all of the "foreground" or "carpet" plants require at
least 2 wpg.
