Soaking rock before adding to tank? | |
reun Big Fish Posts: 332 Kudos: 216 Registered: 04-Nov-2005 | I purchased a rock piece from my local fish store and i have cleaned it and soaked it in water for a couple days, im wondering how long i should soak it before i add it to my 29 gallon? since its from a fish store i hope that its treated and everything, but on the safe side, how long should i let it sit? |

poisonwaffle Mega Fish Posts: 1397 Kudos: 591 Registered: 11-Feb-2003 | You may want to bake it to make sure there's nothing living on it, or boil it if you can fit it in a pot... Try pouring some vinegar over it to see if it reacts with it. If it does, it'll fizz/bubble up, and then you know it isn't inert, and it'll leach into the tank (which is bad)... you'll want to toss it out if it does that Other than that, I don't really think you need to soak it for an extended period of time, unless it's dirty or something. Give it a good scrub down, let it soak for a day at the most (IMO), and toss it in the tank... should be good |

One thing to remember is that most fish stores have "guests"... Escapees from their live food section, crickets, etc. These find a home behind counters displays and among rocks etc. Frequently the store managers will have an exterminator in and they spray overnight for these pests. The exterminators are not always careful and will spray the rocks and all sorts of other things with what is sometimes a spray that has oil in it.
