Nothing like a school of harlies or small tetras in a nice planted tank

I'll do graffiti,
If you sing to me in French.

Tetra,

This is a wonderful site for getting ideas for backgrounds, substrate and plants...

Have a look at the latest entries in Aquascaping Contest Entries! Top of this thread there are some very good examples of the different mixes ( base, backing, plants etc) It depends weather you want to go completly natural or way out as far as a colour sceme. Remember there are several colours to be considered.

Here is guide to choosing colours it is called the 60,30,10 rule.
The main colour 60% usually the base/plants
Intermediate colour 30% base/ rocks/ driftwood/.
The balance 10% can be the fish colours.
I have not included the backing as this is usually covered by the planting but it can be included in the 10%
This is only a guide but it works.

It's a ten gallon?

SHELLIES of course!!! The little shelldwellers from Lake Tang would be awesome in a ten gallon.

You could divide it once or twice and have a couple of males, or leave it open and have a couple females. Or one male and a group of panda cories, or something around the same size.

Killis are always an option, but I don't know killies.

Maybe paradise fish? Or a couple of any livebearer...

What interests YOU?

All kinds of things would look nice. Harlequin rasboras color up very nicely after having been in a tank for a while. A pair of german blue rams would be very colorful and pretty as well (though slightly sensitive).

Black gravel, black background. Lighter colors pale the fish, and distract from them.

Black gravel, definitely. Looks more natural than blue, and doesn't distract from the fish. I'd actually go with a black background as well. Live plants almost always look nicer than fake, IMO. Lighter colored fish would show up better with that dark gravel and background.

They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.
