Hi,
First, I would purchase several varieties of plants
with different shades of greens, different types of
leaves, and toss in a few reds.
Then I'd plant them in some sort of self pleasing
arrangement and then sit back.
As any planted tank ages, and the plants grow, one
is constantly snipping, rearranging, and replanting.
The tank becomes a living being and you the painter.
Some of the plants will thrive, and some will die.
Those that thrive, you will want to keep pruning
and replanting.

And, the fun part is that at some time you either
need more tanks , or you sell your plants, or
barter them for others.

Frank

Again I differer with Frank all in good fun. We are both trying to help where necesary and give different ideas.

Look in My Profile as Naming My tank in Photo Booth

Some of those plants I have had well over 10 years and they were bought as large plants.

It will depend on several factors.
$$$ how much you are prepared to spend.
You tanks suitability filtration, lighting (must be the best) fish and the time you are prepared to spend and wait for all this to develop.
H2o or not
The availability of the plants.
Plants that are not suitable to grow together can be very costly. I suggest you ask and do a good study beforec you commence. Think twice then act once
Ask in the plant forum as well.

Keith

Hi,
If the val starts to grow out the top of the tank,
then just trim off the outer leaves. Shorter ones
will grow from the center to replace them.
Then continue the process.

umm...val is not a free-standing plant, is it? (ie, it can't grow OUT of the water the way rushes or lotus do...)if it gets taller than the tank it just trails along the surface...that's what my giant val does - leaves about 550mm long, happily trailing along the surface providing shade and cover for the hatchets...

Well anyone whose seen pics of my tank will know I've got a jungle.

Being Irish, diplomacy is in my blood, so I agree with Frank and Keith.

I started doing it the way Frank suggested and it certainly worked......eventually. Took a lot of effort, time, patience, upgrading of equipment and lot's and lot's of trial and error. Was it fun, for the most part yes, although there were moments when I wanted to chuck the whole thing out the window. As I look at it now I'm pround and happy with it.

HOWEVER.....if I had to do it all over again, I would most definately go the way Keith has suggested. In the end it would be alot easier and quicker and the results probaly better.

It's up to you and pretty much depends on the type of person you are and how much time you are willing to invest. Can you take having your arm in water up to the armoit a few hours every week ?

Some days you're the pigeon and some days you're the statue.

Remember that age and treachery will always triumph over youth and ability.

Hi All,
Gosh, I guess I assumed, and did not specifically
state, and that was the source of the "difference?"
of opinion.

When I suggested purchasing a variety of plants,
with varying shades of green and different leaf
types, I presumed that one would figure out how
much light they had, and then choose plants from
that wattage (light demand) or lower.
I never intended that one go to the LFS or on line
and blindly order plants willy nilly.

I'll be more specific next time... Sorry

Frank

I think it depends on what kind of jungle you want, there can be oversized plants for the tank that will make it look like a jungle or maybe a lot of plants, that might be considered a jungle, too.

All in all you have to consider the results, for example as you mentioned, valls overgrow the tanks (usually), so the leaves are gonna float in the surface, shading the smaller plants, same with apons and lotus, so you want to have a good balance between all this conditions and them take them to practice.

Hello Frank
I think you have been around enough and with all you training. NEVER assume anything.

That was one very quick lesson I learnt when I started Teaching.

As I said "We are all helping in our own way" and its good fun as we do it.

Keep it up Frank
