I'd like to mix Tahitian Moon Sand and pool sand for my new tank, would this be ok?

Does sand have to be rinsed/cleaned before going in the tank like gravel?

Sand needs LOTS of rinsing. Any of the fine particles that dont get rinsed off can and will jam your filter up ...been there done that have the busted impellers to prove it.

As for mixing the sand, I dont see any reason why not to...if one is heavier than the other it's likely to settle out but with regular mixing with MTS or manually you should be fine .

Definitely follow Babel's advice about rinsing the sand ALOT, rinse it again even after you think you've rinsed it enough I got my sand in the tank only to have it cloud of the water for days until I decided to empty out most of the water and refill it. It was not a fun time at all
After the water cleared I really like the look though.
Good luck with the sand!

YES and more YES

Sand is a very dirty material to deal with at any time. If possible seive it with a sand seive first this will remove most of the very fine particals. Then wash and rewash it several times, until all the dirt is removed.

You can use EcoComplete, a dark substrate with varied aggregate size from sand to pebble. Purportedly pH neutral, plant friendly and bio-active. I have used it in three of my tanks and I love it!

By the way... no rinsing is necessary for the product!
