Step one:
Add a background.

Step two:
Pick two background plants and one forground plant get rid of everything else. What you have right now looks like one of everything and just isnt natural IMO . Keep in mind that you don't want large plants in that small a tank.

I think all you have to do is add a black or blue background, as it's quite nice as it is.

Certainly paint the back of the tank black also some small flatish rocks and a group or three of very small (low) plants scatered along the front as it looks rather bare.

Have a look in [link=My Profile]

I think you need to define a focal point in the tank. A spot that the eye is drawn to... a specimen plant or hardscape, like driftwood or rock arrangement.

The focal point is never dead center in your tank. "Dutch" style tanks use the "magic" point as the focal point. It is 2/5s from the side and 2/5s from the back wall. The plants should build toward that point and not hide it.

You may want to do a couple of sketches of what you might like after viewing this site:

I agree with some of the others. Your tank certainly doesn't look bad right now, far from it, actually. But I would add some sort of focal point and a few random stones throughout the tank. When it all comes down to it, its just personal preference, any way. Good luck.

"Full of holes..."

I assume that means the leaves have holes in them. The questions then are:
o What plants?
o What fish do you have?
o What are your water parameters including lights and lighting duration?

fishyhelper288,

Usually holes are a sign of a lack of potassium. DO you use fertilizers in your tank, if so which and how often?

Otherwise, show us a pic of the rock tank, I might just get inspired by it.

And just in case you care, Here is my 20 Long.

Hi there,
Fishy your tanks looks pretty good.
Im glad you pulled the fake ones, I was
going to suggest that.
First of all, i dont know what you have done since,
but those large swords should go back further.
They seem out of place near the front.
Can you post a pic of what youve done so far?

*retypes..grr*

lol i already moved the swords to the back before i read this....i have 2 light strips.one goes to a 20 gallon high origionaly, and one to a 29 gallon. i cant afford a compact light strip atm. the light is on sometime 24 hours, sometimes 12, some times 6, it depends if i am home, and what time i get up, or go to bed, sometimes i forget to turn it off, lol.... and withthe holes, i dont think its the fish i have corys, rainbows zebras, ottos, 2 plecos and 2 young cichlids i have only ever seen the ottos sitting on the leaves.

no i dont use ferts, because i dont have acess to them, is there a home made thing i can use?/make

thanks for the help

Yes you can make "homemade" ferts, but you'll still need to search for the powders to mix it up. There are a number of places online that you can order the dry powders for mixing your own. It's highly reccomended that you only add what the plants actually need rather than blanket dosing the tank which is what happens when you use premixed powders. I use a mix of potassium nitrate and epsom salts in my tanks to make up for deficencies in my particular water supply, each persons is different though .

Dig around in the planted forum (hee hee ) for info about ferts, and make a seperate post there if you cant find what you're looking for .

^_^
