I recently aquired 2 4cm clown loaches from a friend who swapped to marine.

Ordinarily I wouldn't have taken them, but their other choice was living in the betta sump in his shed, so i figured I may as well.

currently they are whizzing around my 2 1/2' tank that has the betta jars in it. No ich, and no stress, but they are a bit nervy.

This is normal, yes?

Anyway, they are going to end up in a 4' planted tank, and i was wondering how long it would take for them to get to a size that would require me seeking larger housing for them?

They are betta-sized now, so I have no problem letting them grow up in a 4', but i figure eventually they'll need a 6x2x2.

So how long can I enjoy them for?

Some CL's have some growth spurts, but usually average out over the life span. At 4cm I'm guessin they are just under 2". If the 4' tank is a 55, prolly about 2-3 years. If its a 75, 3-5 years is possible. You may want to look into a 3rd CL, as they do best in groups. CL's are VERY slow growers even in the best conditions.

The four babies (all about30mm) I bought about two years ago are all different sizes now ranging from 40-65mm. They had one spurt growth about 3 months ago and none since

As much as you are going to want it to be less irritating, they do grow this slowly. And by the time they are big and ready for a new tank, you will have acquired the money and space, or will be too much in love with them, so u will beg, borrow, steal for a big enuff tank and sell furniture to make space. You will enjoy them in your tank for a long time. They are slow growers & if they'll have a spurt in growth, they'll still slow growers.

they have gained a bit more weight and coloured up a little over the last week

so I should add a 3rd? they are fairly inexpensive, so do they work better in odd or even groups?

I don't know if they like to stay in odd or even, but they like to stay in groups.

Calla, I found that in groups of three they would argue alot. even numbers seem to work better. That was my clowns though, it may not normally make a difference.
