The reason for asking this as I have lost my Ottos and I am having trouble replacing them. Naturally the algae is building up. I transferde on of my smallest SAEs to the Betta tank and with in two days he has cleaned 1/3 of a rock 6x2ins far better than any Ottos have ever done.

What should I do keep him there until he is too big for the Betta tank they replace him with another SAE or buy when I can get them the four ottos.

Personally, I'd go with the SAE since it's already proven itself in surviving and cleaning. Plus, they are more flexible with their diet, which might be useful if the algae runs out.

I would keep the SAE in the Betta tank, till you find some Otos. Then replace him & start enjoying the Otos once again.

Your Betta aquarium is a bit small for an SAE in the long term - however, until you find some replacement Otocinclus, leave him there munching on your algae.

Remember that SAE's grow FAST - I had two in 1999 to deal with a hair alga problem and they went from just 1 inch in length to 4 inches in about six weeks!

Is it possible in Aust we are getting a different variety of SAE reason being the one I put into the Betta tank was in there at first until I got the Ottos he/she grew from 1&1/2ins to 2ins in about 6 months and has not grown much at all. Three days since being in the Betta tank the solid green thick moss has all but gone that is about 12sq ins in three days.

Keith, Otto's are quite amazing at cleaning tanks. I've a pair that went thru my 10g betta tank like a white tornado, stripping every bit of algae in just a week. Unfortunately, tho they aren't hardy at all, need a longer than normal acclimation, preferably drip method. longer the better. My petsmart gets them in on tuesdays and by that's the only day I've ever seen them in.
Not to steal you're thread, but what do you feed them when the tank is clean? They won't touch the algae wafers I put in. How exactly do you prepare a cucumber, or even a zucchini slice for feeding?

To be honest I dont feed them ant thing else as there is always plenty of algae in the tank. It is heavly planted ,DW and rocks. Even the SAE has not eaten it all yet.
You can see with this photo and other photos the tank is heavly planted. That is the spiral Val that gets trimmed weekly and is showing no signs of going backwards or slowing down in its growth.
Between the Anubias at the front and the spiral Val there are 13 Crypts, the serated Java fern tops are also going well.
Sorry for the slightly blurred photo it ois not the best tank to photograph.

Here is a side view of the tank as you can see plenty of food for the SAE or the Ottos.

There is no problem with the Betta but when I first introduced him he chased the odd one now and again but I have not seen him do that for a long time.
