Hi, I have 6 Angels of various sizes. Last weekend, I noticed one of the larger ones had a split tail fin. By the time I had the time to get to the fish store to get some melafix, the fin was completely healed. Is this normal for angels?

Hi,
Split tails, aside from water parameters, can be also
be caused by their tank mates (tail nipping), and even
by their size in a shallow tank (dragging them on the
bottoms).

generally if water quality is good, and nutrition is well, fish are fairly resiliant and will heal relatively quickly. id say its probably normal, as ive never heard of a speedy recovery as being bad.

If you are saying it split as Frank mentioned dragging on the bottom. I have heard of fish having fins and tails damaged by sharp objects in the tank ornaments or Driftwood.

That seams a very quick recovery unless it took you a long time to get the medication.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

my Oscar gets torn fins now and then from aggressively moving his decor, and they heal sometimes in as little as 2Days and the average is usually five. and he gets big tears, i credit it mostly to the prostine water and good nutrition as ive been feeder aot better and doing daily water checks with test kits.

I lost one of the smaller angels last night. I discovered his body late this afternoon. Apparently, when the lights go out there is a free for all with the angel community. I noticed this afternoon when it got off work, the largest has nips out of its tail fin and the tip of its top fin has tears. That made me do a count and the smallest was missing. Appearently, it tried to hide behind the cave, and died. He was so pretty. One fin was black and the other white. It had a mostly black body with calico patches. Aggghhh!

I haven't been able to catch them fighting, but my oldest saw a little of it out the corner of her eye last night. When she turned to watch, they stopped and watched her. (Feed me, feed me Symore) They're always begging. I'll have to wait them out and see if I can identify the aggressor/agitator and then seperate them. Hopefully, I won't lose anyone else.

How big is the tank and what else is in the tank?
It could be an aggressive breeding behaviour or a territorial issue.

55 Gallon
5 Angels (now) sizes range from 1/2 inch to 1 1/4 inches
6 Yo-yo loaches sizes range from 1 inch to 1 1/2 inches
9 Black ruby barbs all about 1 inch
5 Neon tetras
1 Apple Snail

The tank is planted with mostly cabomba, Anacharis, frill, a few dwarf anubia, one crypt and one anubia nana.

I didn't think anything was big enough to mate yet. (Although the 2 male barbs are showing pretty well and dancing about. None of the girlies are showing interest.)

Sorry I forgot about the 3 new apple snails added yesterday. They where still floating in the bag when I posted the list. And I was a tad bit tired. It's been a horrible week +.
