As Hokese stated you will be heading for big problems sooner rather than later. You will have to do some serious thinking about what you want to do. If all that info came from the one LFS I would be looking for a more honest and helpful LFS. Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info Look here for my Betta 11Gal Desktop & Placidity 5ft Community Tank Photos Keith Near enough is not good enough, therefore good enough is not near enough, and only your best will do. Unfortunately, with the fish you picked, with growth comes aggression and possesiveness. Do you have a way of naturally dividing the tank? Say with slate or huge decorations. If and only if you can set up territories, you may be able to get "some" of them to get along. If you can partition the tank so the jacks have a comfortable territory, ok. The firemouth and oscar, I have huge doubts. I've heard the firemouth is just plain mean. And I know a oscar is just plain greedy. Once the oscar gets bigger than anything in the tank, say your goodbyes. He'll suck them down in one gulp or split them in two. I think you got a great deal. But now you may have to buy another tank, or lots of additions (dividers and such) in order to keep your occupants. I think the LFS got you on the other end of the deal. Most (all) of these fish get pretty big and can be messy eaters. How did you make out on filters? TTFN --->Ta-Ta-For-Now Kelly ;o} |

FRANK Moderator Posts: 5108 Kudos: 5263 Votes: 1690 Registered: 28-Dec-2002 | Hi, Yup, ya got a good deal on the tank and accessories. But..."I'm not new to the hobby." So, why didn't you take the tank home with you, set it up, fill it with water, turn everything on, and let it run for at least 24 hours to be sure that everything worked and nothing leaked? Someone "not new" to the hobby knows, either through trial and error, or listening to sage advice, that is the way to start a newly purchased aquarium. While at the LFS someone "not new" to the hobby looks through the dealers tanks, and writes down the names of the fish that they like and think they might want for the tank, and while the new tank is "cooking in" the someone who is "not new to the hobby" goes online and checks out the choices of available fish to determine (if the someone who is not new doesn't already know) how big they get and what, if any, fish they would get along with. JD's http://www.willegal.net/tropical_fish/jack-dempsey.htm Oscars http://www.aqua-fish.net/show.php?h=oscarfish Red Devils http://animal-world.com/encyclo/fresh/cichlid/RedDevil.php Some bottom feeders grow to two feet long! riri1 Fish Addict Posts: 537 Kudos: 435 Votes: 44 Registered: 04-Mar-2005 | not to be offensive to anybody or anything cuz the over stocked tanks with larger fish like arowanas, dats, and some larger catfish are for a temporay tanks and sometimes have larger ponds for them. i go on another site and most people on the got 240 gallon tanks and up the only way ur tank will work out is if u dont have the red devil and the oscar wont eat the other fish main reason is jds can get around 14 inches if ur lucky 10-12 inches is more common. the red devil will get more around 15 inches and is fast and mean as hell. The firemouth gets around 6 inchs but the oscars mouth will be way to small to eat it and firemouths are really fast. what i see happening is the jds pairing up they take like half of the tank then that makes the red devil, oscar, firemouth, and jd on the other half of the tank...... the red devil will probly kill all the other fish or try to push them over to the pairs side if they for a pair..... just not good for the fish. |
