My tank finally shows nitrites and is beginning to cycle after 4 long weeks and I want to add 5 or 6 Corys. I know it's best to add one fish at a time but the Corys sound like they need company. Would adding 2 or 3 then 3 be okay with them? Could I just go ahead and add all 5 or 6? Probably will be several more weeks before I can add them

I know its hard to wait, but I would hold off buying any more fish until the nitrites fall. Placing fish into water with a nitrite spike will most likely cause sickness in the new fish.

Good luck with the tank and fish. What stock do you have now?

I'm definately waiting, just want to be ready for when the water is good and know how many to add at once.

I have 4 giant danios right now. Who I definately will keep, I can't believe people cycle their tanks with fish and then get rid of them. They did all the hard work and they're silly as heck.

My goal is the 4 danios, a school (maybe 6?) of some type of Cory and 2 Blue German Rams . I will leave it at 12 fish so if I ever see something I have to have there's room.

I would certainly wait it is hard but it is the only way to go.
To start off with I would add 2 Danios.
Then a week later test again and if suitable add the Rams.
Wait another two weeks test again and if OK finally start adding the Cories 2+2+1 at least one week apart.

Many will say this is unnecessary fair enough but I am only going by 35+ years of experience

When you get the water tests done dont be satisfied by the LFS saying its OK come back with your test results.

Why rams before corys?

keith nailed it on the head in my opinion...

adding all the others slowly over time, prior to adding the cories gives your bacteria a chance to build enough to cover the added numbers.

cories are probably the most sensitive fish (to water quality) on your list, so it would make sense to add them last when the tank is stable from adding the others.

I am with Lindy, definitely wait until after the nitrites have gone down to 0 before adding any more fish. Nitrites are poison! Don't be in a hurry, you'll have a mess on your hands!

good luck, keep us posted! exciting, huh??

Exciting yes! Tons of fun... i post messages all the time

Should I get Bolivian Rams instead? The profile says they're easier to care for.

Woohoo! As of today my levels are...
Amonnia: 0 ppm
Nitrite: .25 ppm (down from between 2-5 last week)
Nitrate: 0 ppm
PH : 7.6
Temp : 76F

Finding this out today felt great!

Is it best to have 6 in a school? I'd like to keep the number of fish low so they have plenty of room.
