Allow it plenty of time to dry/cure, and then put it back on the tank. I would not do the work in the same room, and I definitely would not allow it to dry sitting on the tank. Depending on the finish you might have to remove it all first this involves either chemiicals or just hard sanding work. It certainly will have to be done in a well ventlated area for your safety then let dry a long slow process.
