New tank | |
Brengun Big Fish Posts: 355 Kudos: 187 Votes: 110 Registered: 22-Jun-2007 | I got a new tank today. Number 5. It is 60cm x 30cm x 350cm = 63litres or 16.6 US gal, or 13.9 UK gal. I have the Eheim filter in the big community tank gathering nice bacteria. I went to the garden centre and bought two big bags of really nice gravel. There is about 60kg or 132lb of gravel to be washed. I have enough gravel for like, forever. Only cost $6 too. |

I went to Lowell's & bought pea gravel for cheap, myself. I should have went to a garden center instead cause the gravel I got was really too big. I hope yours is a lot smaller. |

Brengun Big Fish Posts: 355 Kudos: 187 Votes: 110 Registered: 22-Jun-2007 | The gravel is lovely little pebbles. Is there some trick to washing it? The first lot of water I rinsed with came away red, so no lime in there. I am rinsing the gravel by the half bucket full. It takes forever! Everytime I "think" that's the last rinse, it goes all cloudy again. I rinsed this first half bucket lot like about 20 times! I am also not going to have enough bits of plants in my other tanks to plant out this new tank, so I splurged and ordered some plants online. Here is the order: Anubias Coffeefolia on Cave Rock, 1x Chain Sword Broad, 1x Lilaeopsis pot, 1x Water Rose, 1x Java Fern, 1x Marble Queen sword, 1x Bacopa, 1x bunch Pink Hygro, 1x Bolbitus Heudelotti on Large Driftwood. |

But, i guess you Aussies will know exactly what's up! Cant wait to see what goes in the tank! |

When filling up the new tank measure it as you go and this will give you the correct amount of water in the tank. Be in for a big surprise. Also a min of 3ins 100mm of gravel. Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info Look here for my Betta 11Gal Desktop & Placidity 5ft Community Tank Photos Keith Near enough is not good enough, therefore good enough is not near enough, and only your best will do. Brengun Big Fish Posts: 355 Kudos: 187 Votes: 110 Registered: 22-Jun-2007 | Since I have the tank on a cupboard sitting on a timber floor, I only put 1gal of water into the tank and measured the water level to make sure it was level. I isn't, and the cupboard is also supporting a smaller tank on the other side. Do you know, I never really noticed it wasn't level before? I will have to fiddle a bit and get the cupboard sitting level before any more water gets added. |

Brengun Big Fish Posts: 355 Kudos: 187 Votes: 110 Registered: 22-Jun-2007 | I got busy and have set up the tank complete with water. I also put in a bucket of water from the community tank, and some pale green water from outside so there should be some sort of bacteria in there. |

Brengun Big Fish Posts: 355 Kudos: 187 Votes: 110 Registered: 22-Jun-2007 | On advice, I took my gunky disgusting sponge from the community tank and squeezed it into the new tank. I also planted some java moss and a wisteria bush. Now there is a moonlight gourami (who was throwing his weight around in the community tank), two fat leopard danios and their pal a cochu blue tetra in the new tank. They don't know what to do with all that space. |

Brengun Big Fish Posts: 355 Kudos: 187 Votes: 110 Registered: 22-Jun-2007 | Yay, I have plants for the tank. Had a bit of trouble with the anubia coffeefolia on the cave rock, in that the rock kept wanting to float. Yeah I know rocks aren't supposed to float but this one did, so I had to bury some of it in the gravel to hold it down. The dw was such a big piece I fastened the java fern onto it as well. Was probably enough of the fern to get two plants out of it but to be on the safe side I tied the lot on. The black bit in the middle between the chain swords and the Lilaeopsis is a bit of slate which I tried to set up as some sort of pathway to where I don't know. I added a little sword of some sort to the front right which wasn't growing at all in another tank. The marble queen sword turned out to be so big it sticks out of the water a little. It was in a pot and potbound so I cut off the pot in bits and took off the wet paperlike stuff from about the ryzome to stop any rotting. I put the marble queen at the back left side. On the left, to shield the view of the filter, I planted the Bacopa. The pink hygro was already highgrown and barely fitted in front of the heater on the right rear of the tank. There was a bit of wistera I had already growing in the rear of the tank in the middle so I left it there. The couple of water roses I put in front of the marble sword, and behind the chainsword broad. The water is a bit cloudy since I stirred it up and today is a fine day with lots of sun and reflection on the tank but I took some photos anyway cause I wanted to share. I have a problem though. My moonlight gourami has decided he will not share his new tank with angels, bolivian rams, or dw gouramis. Can you check the fish in tanks in my profile and suggest what else I could put in with him? Cory's perhaps? Doh, I forgot to install the airpump and airwand. Never mind, that will be something to do tomorrow. |

How much light do you have on this tank ... reason I ask is the Lilaeopsis could be a bit difficult to grow with out a fair bit of light . Also from my experience Gourami's love eating it . Garry |

fish patty Fish Addict Posts: 539 Kudos: 223 Votes: 255 Registered: 04-Oct-2006 | This tank ought to turn out nice Bren! I like your planting style. I'd like to see it when it's grown up. You might not end up with a path by the time the plants grow up though. I especially like that anubia coffeefolia. I didn't know aquarium plants came that green! |
