terka27![]() Hobbyist Posts: 64 Votes: 0 Registered: 11-Nov-2003 ![]() ![]() | hi, i currently have a 55 gallon with 2 filters in my tank. one is an aquaclear and the other one is a topfin (came with the tank). both of these are the ones you hang on the side of the tank. i really detest both. mostly because the aquaclear is threatening to overflow and both are very loud as the water falls into the tank. i have been thinking of getting an eheim canister filter but i'm not sure which one and if they are any quieter. i hate how loud our tank is since it's in the living room. anyone have any recommendations about which site would sell them for the cheapest? as i've looked and they all seem expensive. anyone have these filters? i've only read good things about them but i'd love to hear from others who have them and which models. i'm looking for one that isn't the most expensive. (i live in canada too, but can order into the states - but would prefer a canadian place to order) |

I really like both filters. The Eheim that I have is rated for a 90G aquarium and has a 180W heater. Two trays, one with sintered glass and one with ceramic rings, provide breeding space for bacteria. A fine pad and a coarse pad provide mechanical filtration. The unit is very quiet and I clean it every three months. I have a sponge pre-filter on the intake that prevents coarse deletrius from entering the cannister. Addistionally, I purchased a retrofit kit to adjust the output. I consider the unit a great filter that is a pain in the posterior to clean. The media trays are rinsed in waste water from the aquarium when I clean the cannister and then stored in a 5 gallon bucket in aquarium water. The coarse pad in thoroughly rinsed in tap water. The fine pad is replaced, the cannister is scrubbed down, the impeller and impeller reservoir cleaned. The baskets (trays are replaced in the cannister, the cannister is refilled with aquarium water and then connected with the quick disconnect lines. I then cross my fingers when I start up the unit that the quick fill works. If not, I have to pump the contraption with the large button on top. AC is much simpler. The 500 is double sponged, no carbon or ceramic rings. Each week, a thoroughly rinse and squeeze clean one sponge in water siphoned from the aquarium. The other sponge moves down in the basket. Essentially, each sponge gets squeezed clean once every two weeks. Once a week, I detach the riser tube and clean it with a toothbrush because of plant debris. Once a month, I break down the unit and clean the impeller and its reservoir with the sponges in a 5 gallon bucket of aquarium water. __________ "To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." researched from Steven Wright |

I have the Pro11 2026 for my 5ft tank I have to touch it to see if it is running it is that quiet. I do a full service on mine every two months, that way it keeps running at a better flow. Go to the Eheim Site and you will get all the info you require. WWW.eheim.com You can actually contact them for your suppliers in your area. Prices can vary.
