Dr. Bonke Moderator Posts: 367 Kudos: 215 Votes: 36 Registered: 15-Apr-2004 | It's been a while huh? The past few monsth I've been mostly just lurking in the background and I haven't really been posting at all, but now that my membership renewal came up I thought I'd post a couple of photos of the big tank. The battle agains algae has been relatively succesful, that is, at least the water is crystal clear again. There is still some hair algae here and there, which I don't see getting better in the near future. Plant growth is pretty good though. I just came back from a 10 day trip to London (I was less than 1 km away from one of the attempt bombs and completely oblivious of what was going on ) and the plants meanwhile have filled up the tank, here is how it looks right now: Dr. Bonke attached this image: |

Dr. Bonke Moderator Posts: 367 Kudos: 215 Votes: 36 Registered: 15-Apr-2004 | On the day we came back my Angels also showed their love for one another and made it impossible for me to do something about all the plants by making a cosy little nest on the (suffering) sword. I called the sword suffering because someone is making holes in every young leaf as it appears from the rosette, leading to rather ugly and stunted leafs... it is getting a bit better now that the algae is (mostly) gone as the leafs come faster and the culprit doesn't have enough times to make many holes before the new leaf grows. Here is the happy couple: Dr. Bonke attached this image: |

Dr. Bonke Moderator Posts: 367 Kudos: 215 Votes: 36 Registered: 15-Apr-2004 | you can see some of the holes in the leaf where the eggs are laid upon, also notice all the oxygen bubbles under the leaf... the CO2 system is doing its job Dr. Bonke attached this image: |

Dr. Bonke Moderator Posts: 367 Kudos: 215 Votes: 36 Registered: 15-Apr-2004 | above you can see mother, below you can see father... they are very protective of their brood, most likely they will manage to save these until they're free swimming, then the young will be game for all the other fish. Until then I won't be able to do much about the tank. Dr. Bonke attached this image: |

Do you have any posts here that tell us more about the parameters, like size, light, CO2, plants etc.? If so, can you link us to it? If not, how about telling us about it. Thanks, Ingo |

Dr. Bonke Moderator Posts: 367 Kudos: 215 Votes: 36 Registered: 15-Apr-2004 | Thanks people The tank is getting better again, which is good because I was getting seriously annoyed with all the algae, now it is down to working out the final details in fertilization etc. and then hopefully I'll be able to get rid of the hair algae as well. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Little fish, I've been keeping a diary in the technical tinkering section where you can find all the details of the tank, it's located here. Though maybe I should ask a moderator to move it to the planted tank section, I think it fits better over there |

Dr. Bonke Moderator Posts: 367 Kudos: 215 Votes: 36 Registered: 15-Apr-2004 | A short update: The angels have been very careful with their brood, and although about half of the eggs got lost in the 5 or 6 successive movings that the parents executed, the remaining ones are now swimming freely. I was hoping that by now they would've been eaten so that I could do a bit of maintenance during the weekend, but instead I have a cloud of Angelfry swimming around in the tank. It is a cute sight though, I think in a couple of weeks I will move the parents to the fry tank and see how far I can have them raise their young. Anyway, here is the happy couple: Dr. Bonke attached this image: edit: I took this photo during a rather sunny afternoon, all the reflections on the glass did not help in making this a good photo, maybe I'll get a better shot this evening, but as this was the first day they are swimming freely I didn't want to wait Last edited by Dr. Bonke at 31-Jul-2005 03:12[/font] |
