I was cleaning my ten gallon tank, and had laid the hood over to one side, on end. It fell over and some of the white plastic, that lines the area the light (fluorescent)is in, shattered and fell out in the floor. Parts of the metal behind it can now be seen and I noticed the rest of the white plastic liner has very visable cracks. Is it still safe to use this thing, or would I be better off replacing it? The light still works.
I have an old incandescent hood out in the garage, but I have a few live plants in this tank.
Any advice will be appreciated.

Hi,
Personally, I'd replace it as soon as I could. It offers
places for moisture (condensation) to collect, and will
corrode the connections. If you use the one that holds
incandescent bulbs, replace the bulbs with screw in
compact flourscent bulbs. Purhase them from nearly any
hardware store, and be sure that they are labeled
DAYLIGHT or SUNLIGHT. Those are 6700K bulbs and near
perfect for plants and vewing fish.

As Frank stated get another one as that broken one will cause you a lot of problems.

Also you have learnt next time lay it down for safety.

Thanks for your replys. I will see if I can find some replacement bulbs for the old hood I have until a new once can be bought. We have a PetsMart in town.
It was already beginning to crack and having it fall over just finished it off. I will be more careful next time and lay it down flat, so the dog can't knock it over. (She likes to help.)

I ran to Wal-Mart and found some flourescent bulbs - not sure they are for plants, but they are bright. I don't even need a new hood as this old one (in good condition)will be fine. It sure does bring out the color of my fish!
We have a storm coming, left overs from Katrina, and Wal-Mart was closer. I was surprised that they had these, but am glad they did.
Take care.
Patricia
