I've just set up my new 10 gallon and here in perth we're having some really cold cold nights.

Overnight the ammount of condenstation forming in the hood is tremendous!

Is there any way of stopping the condesation from forming? I'm worried about the lighting starting to corrode from the high water content.

any ideas?

Hi,
You should worry. You are right about the corrosion
and its effects on the wiring and parts.
The best way is to have a piece of glass on the top of
the tank and then place the light on top of the glass.
The glass will condense the water vapor and keep it
from the light. Cover the entire tank, or all but
enough for the heater, filter tubes and air lines.
Keep the canopy entirely on the glass, don't let
the edge hang over the uncovered part of the tank.
That may mean that you need to invest in a smaller
canopy.

Frank

why can't I have it hang over the edge?

is it because it'll run off of the edges of the canopy?

Sounds like you were not given all the correct info.

A glass top is a 100% must. Water and elictricity do not mix at all. Remove the light unit and completly get it checked out before you think about putting it back on after you get the glass fitted .

How did you buy the tank and the hood?

a proper fitting hood and light for the tank should be easy to find a good pet store and they are inexpensive for that size of tank.

I was told that because the light fitting (a heto) has an acetate shield on it that it'd be fine in the hood (a custom stand and hood for my set up), but after lifting the lid this morning I was horrified to see the amount of condensation on everything.

I'm planning on fitting a cover to the tank after seeing this anyway.

Just as a dumb question, how do you get the cover glass off to feed the fish, when the hood is on? Assuming (as it's only a 24 x 12) it's a single peice of glass?

I have a 5ft tank but four pieces of glass, the front is made up of two pieces 120mm about 5ins wide. I use this for feeding and cleaning.

Contact me if you require more info.

I was planing on getting a hinged piece cut from the coverglass, so I can feed the occupants...

What you've described seems to be the only logical way of doing it

Glass cover usually have hinged parts (it isn't one large piece) that you can flip up. All light strips should have glass cover! ]
