I lost some fish last spring/summer because of temps falling in my tanks when the electric goes out. I wanted to plan better, and was wondering if there were "battery" operated heaters that I could keep on hand for emergencies, whether electric outages or replacing broken units.

Any other suggestions on "emergency" setups would be appreciated.

Thanks....

Hi,
I don't know of any heaters that are battery operated,
but there are several companies that make battery powered
air pumps. Some are large and hook directly to 12 or 24VDC
batteries. These are primarily for keeping bait fish alive
while transporting them. Others are very small and are
designed for aquarium use.

The only other thing I can think of is a computer UPS. Depending on how large of a UPS you get it could last awhile

A large UPS would be very costly a cheap option would be a generator as for camping etc

Good idea! Never thought about a generator. That's a great idea!

I've got a big ups($75) hooked up to my 90g and it can only run a small hob and 2 heaters for 4hours. Found that out last power outage and I had to make off with another ups from the computer which ran another 2hours until luckily the power came on. Useful to run things for a short time but not good for long power outages.

Thanks everyone.... I'll look into the generator... it could have other uses.

I set up a Cichlid tank two weeks ago and had two beautiful yellow and stripe newbies eat'n overnight. There's not even a trace of remains! Anyone know of a battery operated combat stopper for fish? You know, it could zap a tiny bit when they get overly aggressive. Oh well.... it's still an interesting hobby.

Thanks again.

Lucy
