In a large tank you are always best to have 2 heaters.
This way there are less fluctuations in the winter,
and in case one heater were to burn out you have backup.
I would say leave them both and just buy another one.

Hi,
Most folks would err on the safe side and say to leave the
tank with two heaters. 5 watts/gallon used to be the "rule
of thunb" for figuring out what size heater(s) to buy.
Actually, much of that depends upon how cold you keep the
room that the fish are in. If it's kept "cool" then the
heater has to work "overtime" and extra hard to keep the
tank at temperature.

Always go with two heaters and if possible at each end close to the inlet and outlet for a better distribution of the heated water.

Word of warning never buy a cheap heater it will cost you a lot more if it breaks down or has uneven heating temperatures.

african_man,

I agree with the previous posters, 2 heaters on a larger tank are better than one. And the importance of quality should not be underestimated.

I have to say though that your 2x300W are a little overkill for a 65G. It will not harm the tank, but it is somewhat wasted on it. If you have more tanks, maybe you could buy 2 200W heaters for the 65G and use the 300W heaters in a) either a larger tank together, or b) separately in smaller tanks (if it fits size wise).

Hope this helps,

Ingo

i have one 300 watt on my 55g and its spaced inbetween 2 filters and have never had a problem and it never runs all the time. 2 thermostats (one on each side) to monitor the temp and its always the same.

now on my 150 when, i'll have 2 possibly 3 300 watts on it, i'll know for sure after its setup and i can monitor the temps

Fish tanks are an expensive addiction
