african_man Enthusiast Posts: 167 Kudos: 139 Votes: 2 Registered: 27-Jul-2005 | i hve at the moment a 65 US gal tank (250 L) with two 300watt heaters in it do you think it would be ok to remove one and put it in a separae tank? or would i be underdoing it in the orignial tank? |

This way there are less fluctuations in the winter, and in case one heater were to burn out you have backup. I would say leave them both and just buy another one. FRANK Moderator Posts: 5108 Kudos: 5263 Votes: 1690 Registered: 28-Dec-2002 | Hi, Most folks would err on the safe side and say to leave the tank with two heaters. 5 watts/gallon used to be the "rule of thunb" for figuring out what size heater(s) to buy. Actually, much of that depends upon how cold you keep the room that the fish are in. If it's kept "cool" then the heater has to work "overtime" and extra hard to keep the tank at temperature. Word of warning never buy a cheap heater it will cost you a lot more if it breaks down or has uneven heating temperatures. And the importance of quality should not be underestimated. I have to say though that your 2x300W are a little overkill for a 65G. It will not harm the tank, but it is somewhat wasted on it. If you have more tanks, maybe you could buy 2 200W heaters for the 65G and use the 300W heaters in a) either a larger tank together, or b) separately in smaller tanks (if it fits size wise). monkeyboy Fish Addict Posts: 521 Kudos: 375 Votes: 223 Registered: 10-Apr-2005 | i have one 300 watt on my 55g and its spaced inbetween 2 filters and have never had a problem and it never runs all the time. 2 thermostats (one on each side) to monitor the temp and its always the same. now on my 150 when, i'll have 2 possibly 3 300 watts on it, i'll know for sure after its setup and i can monitor the temps Fish tanks are an expensive addiction |
