It really depends on how your floor is braced but figure that a 75 gallon is going to weigh at least 600 lbs, and probably a bit more.

Does the crawl space extend under the whole house or is there a place where the floor is resting right on the foundation?

Not only does it depend on the floor it also depends how the house was made and how old it is. If your are not sure ask a good builder to check it out for you. If it requires extra support it might only be a matter of a few concrete stumps under a new beam.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

I was once wondering the same thing. My room is over a crawl space type thing. (well were people go down and check the electical and plumbing) and was worried the floor wouldnt hold. But I have a 45 and a 20 next to each other full of water and everything seems fine. And the building was built in 66 so hopefully youll have the same luck.

good luck

Hi,
When locating a large tank, you have to know where the
floor joists are and which way they run. Additionally,
you should never use a tank stand for them that puts the
entire weight on four points. Stands for tanks that large
and larger must distribute the tank's weight across the
entire "footprint" of the stand. Large tanks, as a rule,
should be located at right angles to the floor joists,
and against a load bearing (not floating) wall.

That way, when you place the tank, it is against the
load bearing wall and lies across several joists so they
all support the tank and not just one or two.

the stand i ordered originaly had four adjustable foot pads on the bottome but for an extra 10 bucks they it has 10 screw adjustable feet. it has four across the front about 10" apart, four across the back with same spacing, and on on each of the sides. i was informed that i also get an additionaly 2 that i would have to put in the center of the stand for more support.

I've never seen a stand for a larger tank on legs. They generally sit on the floor with maybe a 2x4 frame or a board laid flat taking the weight. I'd probably avoid stands with individual legs for any 4' or larger tanks.

Generally without further info I've found 75g to be a good cut off for most houses. Anything much more than that and I'd worry about it. It does depend though. The house I just moved into is built sturdier than most bomb shelters. If I so desired I could probably stick a 200g tank in the middle of the largest room without any worries. Gotta love the granite block foundation and 8x8s running under hardwood floors.

The stand I have right now has 2 2 X 4 frames, one on the top and one on the bottom. I am doing to be taking that apart and adding 4 2X2 pillars on the 4 corners and then 1X4 in the center and then adding 1X4 between all the sections to spread the weight. Im then gonna place a 1" thick wood plank on top of that. My tank will then sit 1" into the stand and will have 1X4 surrounding it keeping the tank stable.

Thanks for your input as always, Shane
