The reflector I used when I built my lights came with this film on it. I was going to take it off, but the instructions said to leave it on because it would "protect the shine" on the reflector. It did that for a while, but now two years later the film is discolored and ugly.

It turned a gross yellow color, and I cannot get it off of the reflector. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can use to remove or dissolve this plastic film without hurting the metal?

I have tried many things... Water, rubbing alcohol, Windex, scraping it, peeling it, etc, etc... And I have not had very much success at all.

Why not replace the reflector with new material? It may be much easier than stripping baked on film.

Have you tried goo off yet?
Also give nail polish remover a try. Do it well away from the tank and all that jazz. If there's a way to pour a bit of nail polish remover on and let it set that stuff can disolve press on nails so it should be able to make some headway into the film. Along the same lines paint stripper would likely work, again be cautious and rinse well before it goes near the tank again, who knows what might condense then drip into the tank.

Sorry to tell you this but I think you would have found that the protective film was there for transporting purposes only.

Either try to contact the manufacturer or take it to any LFS that sells that make of light.
Other than that it looks like buying a new light. I also thing the protective film would now be baked on.

This film was supposed to stay on though... It had two films on it... One that was supposed to come off an one that wasn't.

I bought it online, but I can't remember the website. I think Tim might know...

well..i dont see the point of having a plastic protecting the reflector other than for shipping purposes...the reflector should be bare to maximize its use....anyways, have u resorted to acids yet...that will dissolve the plastic sticking on the reflectors...but just be careful delaing with it.

Get a one-sharp sided razor. Those are very available on hardware stores. They are used to scrape glass and let me tell you, they are EFFECTIVE to clean water marks, decals, paint and such from glass.

You can find even an scrapper tool to hold those razors.

The razors are like .2 every piece!

That film is probably stuck on forever now that was baked. I have never seen film that was intended to stay on while the fixture was in use. If it is a plastic reflector, you out of luck.

you learn in communications that it's good to repeat things three times in order for the message to sink in ....if not nail polish remover if you have access to a weak acid that can be used carefully just till it's softened the film enough to be scraped off.

I'll try it... I actually tried to take the film off when I first got the refector (before I read that it wasn't supposed to come off), but I just couldn't get it off at all. Now that it's sort of "baked" on, it's actually easier to get it off it seems.

So far I have managed to get about one fifth of it off with my fingernails, but the paint thinner sounds like a good idea.

The best thing for this would be lighter fluid, it deterorates anything that has been melted or stuck.

Add some to a cloth and keep on rubbing!!!

We used this for sticker stuck to cars for a car dealership
