Light on stand - how much light will be lost? | |
crusha Enthusiast Fish Geek Posts: 262 Kudos: 183 Votes: 102 Registered: 11-Nov-2005 | Hi, I have a question about light stands. I have a Heto double reflector which I want to put up on the stand that came with it. What I was wondering is how much light will be lost by having it up on the stand as opposed to have it directly on the glass lids? Will I lose a lot of the light thus reducing my wpg??? I currently have 2 x 36 watts on a 48 x 18 x 13 tank. One tube is 6,500k and the other is 10,000k. The reason for asking is that I have another light fixture (single) that I would like to try and put on as well, giving me another 36 watts (6,500k) just to see what affect it has on the plants with the extra light but I have to put the Heto on the stand to allow both of them to sit on top as its only 13" wide. Some advise please, thanks in advance. Cheers Crusha |

If the reflector is good, most of the light will enter the tank. I have a light that has legs, and some of the light doesn't make it into the tank, but most of it does. If you can use the lights with legs and add an extra light like you said, you will probably have more light on there total. That would be my guess anyways, like I said you have to try it out to see. I prefer to set my hood on a piece of glass cut for the tank. If you use the legs you will have light escaping out the four sides, and you will also have some reflection from the glass cover under the light back up into the light and out the sides. This all adds up to an area ====== that glares in your eyes as you look at the tank. IMO, most distracting. This is also the reason why I always fill my tanks right up to the plastic trim. As to how much light you would loose, I'm not a physics "expert" I have no idea. Frank -->>> The Confidence of Amateurs, is the Envy of Professionals <<<-- |

You certainly will loose some light (an added distance from the water) It will be less light at the bottom of the tank. I think those little leg/stands were made where the tank has no glass top and trying to the moisture away. Yes it will be very glary when up close and very distractive from a distance. I also dont like the idea of the legs being connected to the glass edges knowing my luck I would knock it bust the sides and the light would end up in the tank water. Too much glare so I just MADE them both fit on the glass instead, doesn't look too bad i guess, it was purely an exercise to see if it looked better on the stand. Cheers, have a good weekend Crusha |
