Problem with Fluorescent Light | |
Cichlid Keeper Big Fish Posts: 368 Kudos: 466 Votes: 304 Registered: 17-Aug-2003 | One of the fluorescent lights in my 55 has stopped working. The light tube and fuse are both still good. I checked them by plugging them into the light on the other side. All the wires are connected fine and there isn't any shorts anywhere or build up of corrosion anywhere. If anyone has any idea where my problem may lie it would be greatly appreciated. Are should I not waste my time and just buy a new one. Thanks |

When I had a similiar problem, I discovered that the wires were not soldered, but instead crimped inside a brass sleeve. One of the connections was loose and the circuit was open. I twisted the wires together, soldered them and then placed a wire nut over the connection. Check the connections to the sockets and the sockets to the pins on the tubes. They frequently corrode and/or loose their spring and fail to make connection to the tube pins. Check the wires (tug gently on the connections)and then look at the push button on/off switch. Use an ohmmeter and ensure that it is working. Some of the manufacturers use either two ballasts, or one ballast with two sections. One ballast could be bad, or one half of one could be bad. You should be able to purchase a replacement and rewire it. Hope this helps... Frank -->>> The Confidence of Amateurs, is the Envy of Professionals <<<-- |

You have possibly only temporarly fixed the problem. You will have to replace the faulty unit part before it causes more problems.
