Total Disolved Solids (TDS) is a meter that measures the current between two points (the probe) with a given difference in potential (voltage). Read the information on this site: http://www.waterfiltersonline.com/tds-sources.asp Since RO water is more "pure" than tap water or your tank water, it makes sense that its reading should be lower. Your reading on the unit may be tds or it may be a value related to tds. For example a reading of 21 may be 21 micro siemens or it may be 42 micro siemens. What is important is that the unit is measuring the fact that your RO is about 1/3 the conductivity of your tap water. Of course, if you have not calibrated your unit, that measure may be distorted. You should have received calibrating fluid and instructions on calibrating with the unit. If not, go to the manufacturer's website... PS If your unit is calibrated, your RO water is testing a little high. My RO unit brings conductivity to 30 ms. A higher reading from your RO may indicate that it is time to change filter units or backflush your membrane.
