Hey guys,

It's been a while!

i was wondering if anyone saw any issue with me going down to the beach and collecting shell grit for my tanks rather than paying for it?

Thanks in advance for your comments!

Hi,
While a day at the beach would be more fun than going
to a Feed & Seed Store and purchasing a bag, collecting
the grit on the beach is more risky.

Along with the risk of pollution, critters, and foreign
objects you would have to clean, and prep it to all the
possibilities. I'm sure that if you walk into any store
catering to the ranches down there, or a feed and seed
store in town, that you can pick up bags of the stuff
for next to nothing. It's sold for folks to feed to their
poultry. They use it as grit in their gizzards to crush
their food.

If you want to go and collect shell grit go and do it BUT under no circumstances put it into any tank. Who know what it contains and trying to save a few $$ could easily end up costing you very big $$$$ in the long term. Besides it is a very cheap product.
I have bought it plenty of times (I add it to potting mixture for some plants)

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

If you can find a animal feed store close by it will be a fraction of the price and you can buy it loose also there is various grades of shell grit.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info
