They can be used providing the internal tubes are not exposed to water. As Frank stated glass can be fitted or it must sit on a full glass lid.

I have one installed in my heated hot box for the orchids where there is always high humidity and it has never given me a problem in about 10 years

Has anyone found or made a guide to convert a 48" shop light to something appropriate for an aquarium light? Basically i have a shop light and a 48 inch 55 gallon aquarium. Unfortunately the aquarium only has the allowance for 2 separate light fixtures. I am not looking to spend a whole lot of money but i would like to provide a lot more wattage to my plants i would like to keep. If it gets on the expensive side it would be better and more cost/time effective to just buy a decent light set. So if anyone else has done this what do you suggest? I think it has 2 25w flourescent bulbs in it currently. I can get further information if required. Thank you for any help.

Ive done that before you just have to build a box to put it in make a hood for your aquarium with the shop light in it. if it is the shop light with an actual ballist in it.

Hi,
When I had my 55, I used a shop light from the hardware
store, installed two 40 watt flourscent DAYLIGHT bulbs
and then had a piece of glass cut and polished to set
inside the rim of the tank on the plastic ledges.
That glass protected the shoplight from condensation
and splash from the air stones and filter return.

Does anyone know of a FAQ on this conversion? I am wondering what other types of bulbs might be used with a shop light etc.
