Stupid Python Question | |
johnnyav Fingerling Posts: 33 Kudos: 20 Votes: 8 Registered: 28-Sep-2004 | When I use 5 gallon buckets to do a water change I add the conditioner to the water in the bucket before I pour it in. Do you add the conditioner to the tank water when you use the python? |

FRANK Moderator Posts: 5108 Kudos: 5263 Votes: 1690 Registered: 28-Dec-2002 | Hi, That's exactly what I do. After vacuuming and removing 10-20% of the tanks volume, I shut off the valve at the syphon, go back to the sink, recheck the temperature, and open the valve to drain the old tank water in the hose. Then I shut off the valve at the end of the hose, set the valve for "fill" and return to the tank. As the fresh water goes into the tank, I add the required amount of dechlorinator, and it mixes in the return flow. Frank -->>> The Confidence of Amateurs, is the Envy of Professionals <<<-- |

And yes, you add it directly to the tank. If by conditioner you mean something else, you may still want to do it in a separate bucket. For example, if your conditioner manipulates the water's chemistry in any way, you should always do it in a separate bucket until it is equal to the tank itself. This prevents stress/shock related to the fish. There is always a bigger fish... |

EVER. *Chelle* I love the fishes cuz they're SOOO delicious... |

coffeeman Enthusiast Posts: 186 Kudos: 60 Votes: 21 Registered: 15-Jan-2003 | My LFS has python plus a different brand. The other brand is blue and looks a bit beefier than the pythons. Since pythons tend to break (or at least mine does) I am going to start trying this other brand as parts start breaking and I'll let you all know how it goes. On a related note, I realy need to get the longer vac tube. The little stock one requires me to get too wet when vacuuming my 90! ETA: Back on the subject at hand, I add the conditioner directly to the water as I am adding the water. I've considered rigging something up to mix the conditioner in the water stream but it seems hard and pointless. Last edited by coffeeman at 05-Jan-2006 23:05 |

There are several DIY articles at various sites that explains how to do this. I'm sure with a little searching you could find them. I've got them on my office computer, which unfortunately I'm not at, but if I remember will try to reference them later. Jim Here's the link for making your own "Python" type water changer. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/diy_python.php Last edited by OldTimer at 06-Jan-2006 10:34 |

As far as I know it works the same as the same as the python. Trying to remember where I bought it & I think it was from here http://www.aquamail.com.au/ Their website is currently being updated - but you can still access it & get all contact details - just can't see their catalogue. If I've given you the wrong supplier & you're still interesting in sourcing an Aussie supplier, pm me & I'm sure I still have the invoice at home. BTW, do you read this thread previously? http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/threads/11399.1.htm?17 I'd stopped using my Lee's (read python) 'cause of the water waste issue (drought issue here in Sydney). Read this thread to learn that you don't need to leave the water running. Now I know that, I'll start using it again. Hope this helps. Cheers TW |
