When I use 5 gallon buckets to do a water change I add the conditioner to the water in the bucket before I pour it in. Do you add the conditioner to the tank water when you use the python?

Hi,
That's exactly what I do. After vacuuming and removing
10-20% of the tanks volume, I shut off the valve at the
syphon, go back to the sink, recheck the temperature,
and open the valve to drain the old tank water in the hose.
Then I shut off the valve at the end of the hose, set the
valve for "fill" and return to the tank. As the fresh
water goes into the tank, I add the required amount of
dechlorinator, and it mixes in the return flow.

You can add dechlorinator (if by conditioner you mean dechlorinator) before or during the time you add water back to the tank. And yes, you add it directly to the tank.

If by conditioner you mean something else, you may still want to do it in a separate bucket. For example, if your conditioner manipulates the water's chemistry in any way, you should always do it in a separate bucket until it is equal to the tank itself. This prevents stress/shock related to the fish.

i use mine for all kinds of various things.. i give my dogs baths with it by hooking it to the bathroom sink.... because i dont have a shower head that detaches... i also use it to fill my dogs' pool in the backyard, seeing as how my house was built without a hose nozzle in the back... its either the python, or drag a hose through the middle of the house and out the back door....

and... of course... i use it for all my fishkeeping needs... i will never go back to a normal syphon.. EVER.

so the bet thing BEFORE sliced bread is Frank?

what you can do too if you are not a python owner is look for "Blue Magic" it is the same system almost(same pump and hose, just buy the vac tube) and was meant for waterbeds. my friend found them for $5 CAD a pop once and bought out the store hehehehe.

My LFS has python plus a different brand. The other brand is blue and looks a bit beefier than the pythons. Since pythons tend to break (or at least mine does) I am going to start trying this other brand as parts start breaking and I'll let you all know how it goes.

On a related note, I realy need to get the longer vac tube. The little stock one requires me to get too wet when vacuuming my 90!

ETA: Back on the subject at hand, I add the conditioner directly to the water as I am adding the water. I've considered rigging something up to mix the conditioner in the water stream but it seems hard and pointless.

wish-ga, they may not be available, but you can easily make your own at a much lower cost than purchasing the actual "Python."

There are several DIY articles at various sites that explains how to do this. I'm sure with a little searching you could find them. I've got them on my office computer, which unfortunately I'm not at, but if I remember will try to reference them later.

Jim

Here's the link for making your own "Python" type water changer.

I bought a Lee's system on line here in Australia. As far as I know it works the same as the same as the python.

Trying to remember where I bought it & I think it was from here http://www.aquamail.com.au/ Their website is currently being updated - but you can still access it & get all contact details - just can't see their catalogue. If I've given you the wrong supplier & you're still interesting in sourcing an Aussie supplier, pm me & I'm sure I still have the invoice at home.

BTW, do you read this thread previously?

http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/threads/11399.1.htm?17 I'd stopped using my Lee's (read python) 'cause of the water waste issue (drought issue here in Sydney). Read this thread to learn that you don't need to leave the water running. Now I know that, I'll start using it again.

Hope this helps.

Cheers
TW
